‘I Would Be Thrilled’ Charlie Day Wants a Luigi’s Mansion Movie to Happen

‘I Would Be Thrilled’ Charlie Day Wants a Luigi’s Mansion Movie to Happen

Charlie Day, the voice of Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise, would be excited to step into the role again if the Luigi’s Mansion games were to get their own animated spin-off film. Day has expressed an appreciation for the spooky Super Mario franchise games starring the green-shirted plumber, and while he doesn’t know if they’re being made into a film, he thinks doing so would be a great idea that he’d gladly dive into.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is getting ready to hit theaters on April 1, featuring many returning stars from the first film, including Day. It’s a follow-up to Nintendo and Illumination’s smash hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023 and blew the doors off box offices, and is currently sitting as the sixth-highest-grossing animated movie in the history of film. Following the success of the first movie, several fans have identified Luigi’s Mansion as one of the Nintendo franchises most deserving of a movie, and the actor playing Mario’s brother seems to be on board with the idea.

Super Mario Galaxy Movie Leak May Have Spoiled a Major Character

A recent listing for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie may spoil the appearance of a particular villain in the Illumination sequel film.

Charlie Day Would Love to Star in a Luigi’s Mansion Movie

In the lead-up to the first sequel’s premiere, Day said he would be “thrilled” to star in a spin-off that captures the creepy nature of one of the best games released on GameCube. In an interview with ScreenRant alongside costars Anya Taylor-Joy and Keegan-Michael Key, who will be reprising their roles as Peach and Toad, respectively, Day was asked if he would be interested in playing Luigi again for a Luigi’s Mansion spin-off, confirming that he would be happy to take the role if it were offered to him. “Yeah, it’d be a lot of pressure,” he commented, before adding, “But if they do it, I’m in.”

Day indicated that he is a fan of the Luigi’s Mansion series, which covers three console-based games and one Capcom-developed arcade cabinet that came out in 2015. Even before the first movie was released, some fans noted shades of Luigi’s Mansion in The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s first trailer, which closed on a five-second clip of Luigi running terrified through a magma-coated wasteland from a horde of Dry Bones before barricading himself behind a pair of double doors. That clip made the movie’s final cut, and although no ghosts were sucked up by vacuum cleaners during the film’s runtime, many fans couldn’t help but notice Luigi was being used in the biggest horror aspects of the kid-friendly movie.

Along with Day’s support for such a movie, he also indicated that he’s got some ideas about how it could be a success. “And not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids, but it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun,” he noted. Key also got on board with the idea of adding in some lighthearted video game-style jump scares to the Super Mario Bros. Movie universe, saying everyone loves them, with Taylor-Joy jokingly chiming in, “Especially 3-year-olds.”

There is currently no indication that a Luigi’s Mansion movie is in the works, and Day indicated that he has not heard anything that would point to him being due to take top billing in an upcoming Super Mario film. “It does seem like it would make a great movie, but I am not… They don’t put me in charge of movie studios and for good reason,” he explained. Still, if rumors of a Luigi’s Mansion 4 for the Nintendo Switch 2, which started coming out around the summer of 2025, turn out to be true, then Nintendo could attempt to pull another film together to help boost its popularity among gamers.
