New Official Elden Ring Release Confirmed for August 28

The next Elden Ring release is officially confirmed for Friday, August 28, and so fans should mark their calendars accordingly. Elden Ring was originally released in 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The open world FromSoftware game earned widespread critical acclaim, quickly becoming one of the highest-rated games ever made and often hailed as one of the absolute best games in its genre.

Post-launch, FromSoftware supported Elden Ring with free updates that addressed fan feedback, fixed technical problems, and in some cases, even added brand-new content. Beyond the free updates, FromSoftware also released a paid expansion for Elden Ring, entitled Shadow of the Erdtree, that earned similar acclaim. FromSoftware also released a multiplayer-focused spin-off called Elden Ring Nightreign, and now the next Elden Ring project is nearing release.

When is Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Releasing?

Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is releasing on August 28 for the Nintendo Switch 2. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on Switch 2 will be the same experience that fans have enjoyed on other platforms, but with some added bells and whistles. Tarnished Edition will include two new classes for players to choose from — Heavy Knight and Knight of Ides — with new weapons, skins, and Torrent customization to look forward to as well. Effectively, this means that Switch 2 gamers that have never played Elden Ring will be getting a truly complete experience when the game launches on August 28.

That’s because Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition doesn’t just feature the base game and the new version-specific content. It also comes with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion baked-in. Shadow of the Erdtree is large enough that it could have been its own game, and was even controversially nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025. But while it probably shouldn’t have been eligible for Game of the Year due to its status as an expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree is easily one of the best DLC releases ever, and should ensure that the Switch 2 version of the game is even better than it would be otherwise.

There are some concerns that Elden Ring on Switch 2 might have some technical problems, but if the developers have been able to iron those out, then it could very well be the definitive way to experience the game. Being able to take Elden Ring on the go is a game-changer for many, and the sheer amount of content available is staggering. All this will be coming at a premium price, though, with Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition confirmed to retail for $79.99.

Those that already own Elden Ring on another platform and want to experience the new content coming to the Tarnished Edition are in luck. Launching day and date with Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on Switch 2 is the Tarnished Pack DLC, which gives existing Elden Ring players the chance to experience the new classes and various customization options that are being added. Exact pricing has yet to be announced, but it’s assumed that the Tarnished Pack DLC will cost somewhere around $5.
