The fate of Venom from Insomniac Games is currently in question, as contradictory reports are circulating about the status of the PlayStation game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released on PS5 in 2023, by developer Insomniac Games. The story offered a retelling of the Venom storyline that originated in the Spider-Man comics, with Peter Parker initially wearing the Symbiote costume.
Shortly after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was released, a ransomware attack leaked a Venom PS5 game from Insomniac. The game was supposedly going to be released in 2025, but its existence has never been officially confirmed. That year came and went without any kind of announcement, so there has been a lot of concern about the status of the project, and if it’s still in development at the PlayStation-owned studio.

Has the Venom Spin-Off Game Been Canceled?
In an appearance on the Love it Film podcast, Miles Morales voice actor Nadji Jeter claimed that a Venom spin-off was initially in the works from Insomniac Games. However, it was apparently canceled following the 2024 death of Venom voice actor Tony Todd. News of the cancellation spread to the ResetEra forums, where Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier simply stated that “this isn’t true.”
The rest of this article has MAJOR SPOILERS for Spider-Man 2
In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker and Harry Osborn both serve as hosts of the Venom Symbiote. Insomniac’s Venom is rumored to star Eddie Brock, the host most often associated with the Symbiote. Venom initially started as a villain in the Spider-Man comics, but the character’s popularity resulted in him becoming an anti-hero instead. Venom and Spider-Man would eventually bury the hatchet, with the two often working together against Carnage, a Symbiote paired with serial killer Cletus Kasady. Carnage has not appeared in Insomniac’s universe yet, but Cletus Kasady did have a role in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Fans have since speculated that Carnage will be the main villain in the Venom game.
Lots of games are quietly canceled before getting announced, and it’s possible that’s exactly what happened with Venom. It’s also possible Insomniac is just busy working on its next game; Marvel’s Wolverine will be released September 15 on PS5. Once that game comes out later this year, there’s a good chance Insomniac will reveal what it has in store next. If Insomniac announces Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, it probably means that the Venom game really was canceled, or at least pushed much further down the line.

Whether Venom comes out or not, Marvel fans should have a lot to look forward to from Insomniac. The studio clearly isn’t done with the Spider-Man series, one way or another. The games have sold incredibly well for PlayStation, and the ending of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sets up major conflicts and a potential new playable character. On top of that, Marvel’s Wolverine seems to be setting up bigger things for the X-Men, as well. For now, fans will just have to wait patiently to see what gets announced within the next year or so. With any luck, Insomniac won’t keep fans waiting too much longer for its next spider-themed game.
