It’s The End of an Era for PlayStation Games on PC

It’s The End of an Era for PlayStation Games on PC

PlayStation will reportedly no longer be porting its major PS5 exclusive games, such as Ghost of Yotei and Saros, to PC. PlayStation’s early strategy revolved around purchasing the exclusive rights to release certain games on its consoles, encouraging customers to buy Sony’s gaming hardware over competitors. Eventually, PlayStation bought whole studios, ensuring series like God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Horizon belonged to the company.

PlayStation’s management changed its console-exclusive strategy around 2020, after one of the company’s biggest exclusive games moved platforms. When Horizon Zero Dawn launched on PC, it was seen as a monumental shift in PlayStation’s strategy, with other big name titles soon following suit. Helldivers 2, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man were reportedly hugely successful on PC, selling millions of copies each. The strategy of porting some of its biggest games to PC has reportedly netted the company over $1 billion in revenue.

PlayStation Plus Receives Another Price Hike

PlayStation announces another PlayStation Plus price hike, following a larger cost increase for Sony’s gaming hardware earlier this year.

PlayStation Stops Putting Single-Player Games on PC

SCOOP: PlayStation studio business CEO Hermen Hulst told staff in a town hall Monday morning that the company’s narrative single-player games will now be PlayStation exclusive, confirming Bloomberg’s reporting from earlier this year. Original story from March: www.bloomberg.com/news/article…

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, CEO of Sony’s Studio Business Group, Hermen Hulst, told staff that the company would no longer be porting the company’s narrative single-player games to PC. Games focused on online multiplayer, such as Marathon and Marvel Tokon, will apparently still be released on multiple platforms, but single-player games, like Ghost of Yotei and Saros, will remain console exclusives. This change only applies to PlayStation Studios games, so titles that the company has purchased exclusivity to, such as the PlayStation-published Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, can still be ported to PC.

Sales of PlayStation’s last few PC releases were reportedly lower than expected, which is likely one of the reasons that the company is backtracking on its multiplatform strategy. In March, PlayStation increased the price of its consoles, which will certainly have heightened fears at the company that customers will be put off by console gaming’s rising costs. By removing the option for people to play PlayStation’s major exclusives on PC, fans of certain games will need to purchase a console if they want to get involved. This strategy has been popular with Nintendo since the beginning, though Xbox has pivoted to releasing its studios’ games on every possible platform in recent years.

PC players waited at least a year for PlayStation games to be released on their platform of choice, with many being delayed even longer. This was reportedly because PlayStation wanted to encourage gamers to purchase its hardware so that they could play big-name games on release. Not only this, but porting games to PC was not a priority at the company, which always puts its proprietary hardware first. PlayStation Studios games also often saw a second wave of popularity when released on PC, giving sales and revenue a very welcome bump.

Gamers have been begging PlayStation for a PC port of Saros, but it seems that this dream will now never become a reality. Some have criticized the third-person shooter roguelike for its difficulty. This has encouraged a push for a PC version where people could create mods to adjust the difficulty. Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei was expected to be released on PC this year, particularly given that the first game in the series, Ghost of Tsushima, saw success on PC when it launched in 2024. However, if the recent reports are correct, players will be waiting forever for their PC PlayStation games.
