I’ve Seen Enough, IO Interactive is the Perfect Dev for a Marvel’s Daredevil Game

I’ve Seen Enough, IO Interactive is the Perfect Dev for a Marvel’s Daredevil Game

007 First Light has proven to be one of the best James Bond game adaptations of all time. IO Interactive’s experience with the Hitman series properly prepared the studio for this project, but what makes 007 First Light even more satisfying is that it nails its action just as well as the more stealth-focused moments.

It’s been a very long time since IO Interactive has made something that isn’t attached to the Hitman series, and 007 First Light has been a great demonstration of how much more potential the team working at the studio has. The Hitman games are iconic and have given me and plenty of other gamers years of fun, but 007 First Light hopefully paves the way for IO Interactive to experiment with more projects that aren’t connected to Agent 47. It’s already been confirmed that the team is working on its own original idea with Project Fantasy, which is great. If IO Interactive ever wants to adapt another major existing IP or character, though, it really should take on Daredevil.

007 First Light: All Missions

Take a spoiler-free look at all the missions in 007 First Light to see how many adventures await, and what challenges/collectibles you can find.

After 007 First Light, Marvel’s Daredevil Feels Like the Perfect Character for IO Interactive to Bring to Life

I’m a little bit biased when it comes to this, because I’m not just a big James Bond fan. I fully believe that Daredevil is the most underrated Marvel character of all time. Daredevil hasn’t really ever been given his time to shine in the gaming world, and it’s about time Matt Murdock got the chance to prove himself as a great lead gaming protagonist. Marvel video games have mostly focused on a handful of characters when it comes to standalone characters. Multiplayer options like Marvel Rivals have featured Daredevil, but that game doesn’t allow for the depth that a full adaptation would allow.

One game on the way could potentially open the door for a Daredevil game. Marvel’s Wolverine‘s gameplay puts the titular mutant into intense combat encounters, but Logan is still a fairly grounded character, despite his adamantium enhancements and regenerative abilities. Insomniac Games’ Wolverine story looks great, but it’s still a bit risky after Marvel’s Spider-Man. The latter’s web-slinging mechanics make traveling across the map really fast and practically make it into its own side activity. Wolverine can’t soar through the skies, so his traversal has the potential to feel like a downgrade.

That’s a big issue with Daredevil, too. Even though he has heightened senses from his blindness and is highly skilled in martial arts, he’s one of the more normal Marvel heroes. A Daredevil game would have to be really gritty and grounded. Thankfully, 007 First Light‘s gameplay is a beautiful reminder of how a human can be just as compelling of a character compared to someone with superpowers.

007 First Light’s Action/Stealth Combo Can Get a Fun Shake-Up in Daredevil’s World

One of the biggest hurdles with a Daredevil game is how to adapt a character who’s blind. Keeping the standard third-person design of being able to see a level’s details and surroundings is likely for the best. Matt Murdock still has heightened senses that make it easier to detect the world around him, so players being able to see the world clearly makes sense. There are two ways to play into this character trait, though. The first option is that players can see everything around Matt but can trigger a sixth sense with a feature like 007 First Light‘s Instinct mechanic. Hitman had a similar feature, too, where Agent 47 is able to see through walls and pinpoint NPC locations.

007 First Light expands this mechanic even further by using it as a finite resource. Taking this same approach with an Instinct meter in a Daredevil video game would be the best way to play into Matt’s lack of sight while also allowing players to see the world around him. There is one other way that could flip 007 First Light‘s Instinct on its head, though. To present a greater challenge, the world in a Daredevil game could be blurry and hard to make out (except for Matt’s avatar) until Instinct is triggered to reveal the finer details of the surrounding world.

007 First Light’s License to Kill Mechanic Would Make Even More Sense in a Daredevil Game

If you’re familiar with Daredevil, then you know that Matt Murdock’s strict moral code means that he doesn’t allow himself to kill people. Well, at least for the most part. There have been a few times in the Daredevil comic series where Matt had no choice but to kill someone, or it happened by accident. An IO Interactive-made Daredevil game could play into that by reworking the License to Kill feature. Matt Murdock can be given the okay to take an NPC’s life only if they are threatening someone else’s. This would still align with Matt’s strong belief system. However, it would also open the door to fascinating moral questions and inner turmoil for him to face as a character, which would make for a more compelling story.

A Daredevil Game Has Tons of Post-Launch Potential

Even though the game isn’t even a month old yet, IO Interactive has already announced the first 007 First Light DLC. It introduces a brand-new Bawma mission, and it’s the first step in expanding the game’s post-launch life. This hypothetical Daredevil game that I’ve thought up would be a perfect candidate for the same formula. Granted, most superhero games would be, since each hero has its long list of go-to villains. Daredevil’s enemies would be best candidates for slow-burn introductions, though, instead of pumping the story with antagonists like the Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Matt Murdock’s story is darker and more layered, so villain-centric expansions would allow these characters to have deeper chapters dedicated completely to their individual stories.

As far as anyone knows, a Daredevil game is not in development at any major studio, while IO Interactive is more than likely hard at work on Project Fantasy and potentially even brainstorming ideas for a 007 First Light sequel. That’s exciting enough on its own, but if Bond’s dev team ever wants to find another character to dive into, Daredevil feels like the perfect choice.
