Kirby and the World Beyond was just announced to close today’s Nintendo Direct. It’s coming in spring 2027, and it looks like a new open world adventure for the little pink guy in which he gets a really big sword and smashes open the sky.
In the trailer, we see a lot of Kirby running around a nice big open world, making little “pop pop pop” sounds as he runs and generally doing Kirby things, like eating stuff, fighting King Dedede, and wearing hats. However, at one point, he also somehow manages to smash through the sky itself, revealing a world beyond if you will. There’s a mysterious magical purple lady that appears to him (who, knowing past Kirby games, will almost certainly end up being the villain), and she shows Kirby a huge magical sword that he then uses to fully bust up the sky and explore what’s out there. “What’s out there” seems to be mostly a continuation of his own world, but in the distance we can see a weird structure in the sky and some sort of…mechanical giant snake?
So yeah, I guess Kirby’s just on The Truman Show now!
This is the first brand new, major Kirby game since Kirby and the Forgotten Land (we did get Kirby’s Dream Buffet and Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe in 2022 and 2023, respectively), which represented Kirby’s first foray into fully 3D spaces. Kirby and the World Beyond seems to be taking that a step further by giving him even more open, non-linear space to run around in, and certainly appears to be taking advantage of being on the Nintendo Switch 2 to give Kirby an even bigger world to explore.
We don’t know any other details yet about what this game is going to entail, but next year is Kirby’s 35th anniversary. Knowing that, we’ll likely be seeing a lot more of the little pink dude as we go into 2027.
