A newly announced game on Steam called Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror looks like a PS2-era Harry Potter game with mechanics straight out of 2023’s Hogwarts Legacy. Fans of the Harry Potter franchise might currently be awaiting more news about the confirmed Hogwarts Legacy sequel, but they could probably keep themselves occupied with Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror in the meantime.
Developed by indie studio Frogstorm, Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror doesn’t have a release date yet, much like the Hogwarts Legacy sequel. However, a brand-new trailer has been released for the indie title, showcasing many aspects of its gameplay and suggesting that development might be in its final stages.
Harry Potter-Inspired Game Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror Announced
Revealed on September 8, Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror is a single-player wizardry game on Steam that follows the story of a young boy named Simon Page. He is a second-year student at a namesake magic school that has a lot in common with Harry Potter‘s Hogwarts. Core gameplay mechanics in Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror include spell-casting, meeting other students, unlocking new skills, and exploring new parts of the magical castle as they gradually become available in a Metroidvania fashion.
From what’s been revealed so far, the Hemlotrion school seems to have many areas inspired by Hogwarts. For instance, one scene shows a long corridor that gives off serious Grand Staircase vibes. There also seems to be a gloomy underground section that might remind fans of the Harry Potter series of the Underground Chambers. The good thing is that Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror uses environmental storytelling and seems to encourage players to actively engage with different sections of the map, which is something fans of wizardry and games like Hogwarts Legacy will likely appreciate.
Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror’s Confirmed Features
- Visuals inspired by classic 2000s games
- Magic- and spell-based combat
- Destructible objects
- New and unlockable spells
- Interactions with other students
- Secret parts and hidden items
Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror‘s announcement hasn’t been free of controversy, though. While many seem happy that a new game featuring spell-casting and wizardry is coming out, others have accused the game of being a copycat. That said, it is too soon to judge the development team’s creative approach, and it remains to be seen whether the final product can have its own unique identity or if it is indeed merely a copy of Hogwarts Legacy or older Harry Potter games.

Fans of fantasy games with Harry Potter-style spells and magic might want to add a couple of other games to their wishlist besides Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror. One of the best upcoming games like Hogwarts Legacy is called Witchbrook, a cozy life sim about a wizarding school student. Some have described Witchbrook as Stardew Valley meets Harry Potter, but the game has a lot more to offer than just spell-casting. Another interesting title for fans of the genre is Project Bloomwalker, which looks a lot like Studio Ghibli’s famous anime, Howl’s Moving Castle, but is also all about magic and fantastic creatures.
