Kylie Minogue, The Original Cammy, Nearly Made A Cameo In The New Street Fighter

One of the most contentious things about the new Street Fighter movie is its portrayal of Cammy as a crazed, Harley Quinn-esque character, but this isn’t the first time a live-action version of M. Bison’s Doll has appeared on the big screen. Back in 1994, Australian singer and budding actor Kylie Minogue portrayed a more game-accurate (look, it’s all relative) version of Cammy in the 1994 Street Fighter movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and from the sound of it, she was in talks to possibly return for some kind of cameo this time around before things fell through.

In an interview with LGBTQ+ publication Queerty, Orville Peck, the masked country singer who is also getting into acting himself, talked a bit about working on the Street Fighter movie, in which he plays Vega. This is a good role for him because Vega wears his own mask throughout the movie, which is a pretty good arrangement when you’re making your film debut as someone who has, as long as he’s been in the public eye, obscured his face. Peck and Minogue are known friends and collaborators, with the two releasing a song together with Diplo called “Midnight Ride” back in 2024. So when Queerty was interviewing him, they asked if Peck had reached out to her about taking part in the new film and if she had any advice.

Here, Peck reveals that, at some point in the film’s development, there were talks of having Minogue make a cameo in the movie.

“Okay, I got a little tea, actually,” Peck said. “I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned this, but they were trying to get Kylie to do a cameo in our Street Fighter. They were having a hard time getting a hold of her or whatever, and I was like, ‘Guys, I can text her.’ So, I was trying to orchestrate this whole thing, and it didn’t work out with timing. She was gonna be so down to do it, but yeah, of course, I immediately told Kylie when I got cast. She told me how filming their Street Fighter was one of the most fun experiences of her life, and she was like ‘I’m so excited for you to get to do that.’”

Though the original idea fell through, Peck says he hasn’t given up hope that Minogue and current Cammy Mel Jarson might cross paths, or that the “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” singer could try again in a hypothetical sequel.

“I’m still trying to orchestrate Mel Jarnson and her to be like the two Cammys in a photo [Peck makes a pointing gesture].”

“Oh, like the Spider-Man meme where they’re pointing at each other?” Queerty’s Cameron Scheetz asks.

“Exactly, yeah,” Peck replies.

“We’ll manifest that happening somewhere in the future,” Scheetz says.

“Yeah, maybe the sequel,” Peck says. “We’ll see.”

Street Fighter premiered last weekend and brought in about $51 million globally against an $82 million budget. So while it seems likely it will make that budget back, a sequel doesn’t feel guaranteed at this point, despite the film’s ending setting one up. Overall, the movie is kind of awful in some ways, but also so committed to its various bits that it somehow comes around to being avant-garde in a way that I can’t help but applaud.
