A leaker claims that pre-production on a remake of the original Resident Evil began about one year ago and suggests that it could be a while before the game is released. Capcom has spent the last few years remaking several games in the Resident Evil franchise, and the resulting releases have been critically and commercially successful for the publisher.
The original Resident Evil got an overhaul in 2002 on GameCube. That version has been ported to several different platforms and remains widely available. Despite this, another remake of Resident Evil has been rumored to be in the works. If those rumors are correct, it’s likely Capcom will try to make a version of the game that matches the more recent remakes. That means the static camera and “tank” controls that were present in the 1996 and 2002 versions could be replaced.
Resident Evil 1 Remake Gets Progress Update by Leaker
According to leaker AestheticGamer on Twitter, pre-production on a remake of the first Resident Evil began in August or September 2025. This means that a smaller team has been focused on the early planning stages before production is ready to begin, and it seems that full development on the remake will not begin until after Resident Evil Veronica arrives in 2027. With Capcom focused on other projects first, it could take several years before the Resident Evil 1 remake is ready to be released.

The original Resident Evil focused on protagonists Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, a pair of STARS members dispatched to investigate mysterious deaths and occurrences taking place in the Arklay mountain region. The game takes place in and around Spencer Mansion, where the heroes uncover a conspiracy involving the Umbrella Corporation. The 2002 remake kept most of the original story and gameplay intact, while polishing up the visuals and horror elements. It might seem unusual for Capcom to release a second remake, but there are arguments to be made for another take on Resident Evil 1.

The Resident Evil franchise has changed quite a bit since the first remake’s release. Another overhaul might seem redundant, but there’s an entire generation of gamers that are less familiar with the gameplay from the early entries in the series. A new take on the original Resident Evil could bring the title closer to modern entries, and new story beats could tie it closer to the overall series narrative. Director Shinji Mikami set a high bar with the 2002 remake, which was well received upon its release, and Capcom has maintained that high level of quality for the series over the last decade.
This rumored remake of Resident Evil 1 appears to be far from seeing the light of day, if it even exists, but fans of the series should have no shortage of content to enjoy while they wait. Resident Evil is one of Capcom’s biggest franchises, and the publisher has committed to a release schedule that has become almost yearly. Following Resident Evil Veronica next year, a Resident Evil 0 remake is also rumored for 2028. Capcom has officially confirmed that story DLC is in the works for Resident Evil Requiem as well, though leakers claim it won’t be available until after Veronica comes out.
