Legacy of the Dark Knight Celebrating an Earlier May 2 Media Release

As players count down the days to the release of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, fans will be able to enjoy an exclusive tie-in comic book with The LEGO Batman Returns. This special edition standalone story will introduce audiences to LEGO Batman while also paying homage to the history of the Dark Knight and will give players just a taste of what to expect from LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight before it releases on May 22.

March 30 marks a key date in Batman history, as it was on this day that the Caped Crusader originally appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Warner Bros. Games, TT Games, DC, and The LEGO Group are celebrating the anniversary of Batman’s debut and his upcoming newest venture in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight with the limited edition comic book The LEGO Batman Returns. This tie-in release will connect to the story of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, while referencing past films, television shows, and comic book releases from the franchise.

The LEGO Batman Returns “follows a day in the life of LEGO Batman as he returns to Gotham City after a hiatus and encounters a variety of familiar DC characters.” Audiences will be able to pick up the special comic book completely free of charge at participating comic shops on May 2 in celebration of Free Comic Book Day. Written by Beware the Batman‘s Ivan Cohen and featuring artwork by Batman: Under the Hood‘s Paul Lee, The LEGO Batman Returns blends the beloved storytelling and visuals of DC Comics with the signature humor of LEGO. The beginning panel of The LEGO Batman Returns even depicts the iconic image of the Caped Crusader swinging over Gotham City, which was the classic cover image of the original comic where Batman first appeared.

For fans who are unable to snag a physical copy, The LEGO Batman Returns will also be available for free digitally on May 2 via the DC UNIVERSE INFINITE app. It is unknown if any content included in the comic would be considered spoilers for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, but the standalone nature of the story should make it a worthwhile pickup for players wanting to familiarize themselves with the LEGO version of Batman ahead of the game’s launch. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight introduces an all-new adventure that will follow Bruce Wayne’s epic journey to become the hero of Gotham City and releases for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on May 22, with a launch for Nintendo Switch set for later in 2026.

In addition to the comic book tie-in, four new LEGO DC Batman sets are available, and each kit includes in-game redeemable digital content for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Some of the unlockable content includes an exclusive gold Batsuit and alternate, playable versions of the Batmobile. Each of these special in-game features are only available through the purchase of the LEGO sets, so interested fans may need to plan ahead if they want any of the additional content ready for download once LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight releases in May.

Players have enjoyed a variety of Batman video games over the years, and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight looks to strike a balance between satisfying combat, open-world exploration, and not-so-serious comedy. With promises of introducing elements familiar to comic book fans while also offering a gameplay experience desired by Arkham series regulars, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, along with its tie-in The LEGO Batman Returns, are ready to once again bring the Caped Crusader back into the spotlight.
