Majora’s Mask Switch 2 Remake Explained

According to the latest rumors, Nintendo may be preparing to move forward with a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask for the Switch 2, but fans should keep their expectations in check. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was originally released for the Nintendo 64 as a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Majora’s Mask earned widespread critical acclaim and was praised for taking big risks with the franchise’s established formula.

Majora’s Mask features a unique three-day cycle that dramatically impacts how Link interacts with Termina and its inhabitants. The ticking clock adds an extra sense of urgency to the adventure, and the masks Link collects on his journey open the door to some of the most interesting abilities he’s ever had at his disposal. The whole thing is wrapped in a suffocatingly eerie atmosphere that helps it stand out not just among Zelda games, but games in general. Needless to say, there are many that would relish the chance to play an updated version of Majora’s Mask on the Nintendo Switch 2, and while that may happen eventually, don’t be led astray by recent rumors.

Recently, the IMDB page for Nobuyuki Hiyama, Adult Link in Ocarina of Time, was updated to include mention of a Majora’s Mask remake. Some fans saw this and ran with it, taking it as a leak that the game is in development, but in reality, anyone can update these IMDB pages and so it doesn’t really mean anything. But even though this leak can be disregarded, that doesn’t mean that a Majora’s Mask remake is off the table.

The last time Nintendo remade Ocarina of Time, it remade Majora’s Mask as well. Ocarina of Time 3D was released for the 3DS in 2011, and four years later, Majora’s Mask 3D hit the scene. Since Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask share a lot of assets, it’s natural to assume that Nintendo will want to do something similar on the Switch 2. After all, Nintendo is putting a lot of energy into developing the Ocarina of Time remake for the Switch 2, so why not get more use out of those assets and do a Majora’s Mask remake as well?

As it stands, we don’t know the scope of the Ocarina of Time remake, and so it’s hard to say what form a Majora’s Mask remake would even take. The Ocarina of Time remake reveal trailer simply shows Link sleeping in his house, offering no context for any potential gameplay changes. A Majora’s Mask Switch 2 remake may ultimately depend on how ambitious the OoT remake is. If Ocarina of Time is mainly just a graphical upgrade, a Majora’s Mask Switch 2 remake seems more likely. If it’s reworked to be open world or otherwise more complex, fans may not want to hold their breath for Majora’s Mask to make the leap, but anything could happen.

Even if a Majora’s Mask remake does happen, it would be years before it saw the light of day. In the meantime, Zelda fans can look forward to playing the Ocarina of Time remake on Switch 2 later this year, and if they want to revisit MM, they can play the OG Majora’s Mask through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service.
