Marathon, the brand-new extraction shooter from Destiny and Halo developer Bungie, could be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the near future. Currently, Marathon is set to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC today, March 5, but there has been no word from Bungie as to whether or not it intends to bring the shooter to other platforms. However, an ESRB rating claims that the title has been rated for last-gen consoles, sparking speculation that Bungie is working on bringing its newest release to older hardware.
After an indefinite delay last year, Marathon is finally set to release today. Players who were on the fence about Marathon following the negative feedback it received during closed playtests last year were given the chance to make their own minds up over the weekend, thanks to Marathon‘s open Server Slam, which was available on all supported platforms between February 26 and March 2. With Bungie making tons of improvements and changes over the last few months, players were clearly eager to see how it had evolved, as the Server Slam peaked at more than 143,000 concurrent players on Steam during the playtest.
Best PC Settings for Marathon (Optimization Guide)
While Marathon is reasonably optimized on PC, players can further improve its performance by trying these best settings and achieving higher FPS.
Marathon Might Be Coming to PS4 and Xbox One
Marathon will officially release at 10 AM PT today, March 5. While the shooter will only be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, it has now been suggested that it could also receive a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release later down the line. As spotted by Insider Gaming, the ESRB lists the last-gen consoles under the ‘platforms’ section of Marathon‘s official age rating, despite Bungie only having confirmed that the extraction shooter will release on current-gen consoles and PC. Given that both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are 13 years old, it would be a massive surprise to see Bungie get Marathon to run on such ageing hardware. That’s not to say it’s impossible, but there is also the chance that this is merely a mistake on the ESRB’s behalf.

With talk of the PS6 being just a few years away, many would have expected developers to have left the likes of the PS4 and Xbox One in their rearview mirrors. However, that hasn’t been the case, as the consoles still prove to be extremely popular with gamers. It may come as a surprise if Bungie does intend to release Marathon on PS4 and Xbox One, but it wouldn’t be the only recent shooter to do so. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, for example, only launched in November 2025, but still managed to come to last-gen consoles as well as the latest hardware. There is, of course, a difference in graphic fidelity between the two versions, but it goes to show that it’s not impossible.
Marathon may also need all the help it can get to draw players in, as it will be going toe-to-toe with the new powerhouse on the block: ARC Raiders. Although both are extraction shooters, the two titles take very different approaches to the genre. Embark found huge success with ARC Raiders last year, largely thanks to its casual approach to the extraction shooter genre. Its aggression-based matchmaking and simple UI make it a great game for newcomers, allowing players to focus more on PvE than PvP, if they wish to do so. Marathon, on the other hand, will not adopt the same matchmaking system, which means players will need to be ready for a fight when they drop in.
Another major way that Marathon will differ from ARC Raiders is seasonal progression wipes. While this is the more traditional approach to extraction shooters, resetting players on a regular basis to ensure everybody remains on a level playing field, ARC Raiders mixed things up with a different take on progression wipes. Instead of forcing players to lose all of their accumulated gear and character progression, Embark allows players to leave the Rust Belt during seasonal Expeditions, where they must build their Caravan and sign up for the Expedition if they wish for their progress to be reset. Not everybody has to take part, but there are plenty of rewards and benefits for those who do.
