Marathon Promises War On Dataminers Who Try To Leak Spoilers

Marathon is a live-service game. Bungie updates it and adds content on the back end that doesn’t always show up until weeks or months later as a season unfolds. Dataminers can try to peek at what’s coming down the road by analyzing download files, but Bungie said it’s taking a zero-tolerance approach to spoilers this time around.

“With today’s launch of Marathon, we just wanted to give you all a heads-up that our goal is first and foremost to preserve the experience and surprises for all of our players,” the studio posted on X via the official Marathon account on Thursday. “As such, we will be issuing takedowns for any datamined content that has not yet been revealed to players.”

The warning continued, “Datamining files that are already revealed (character models, weapons, etc.) and creating fun art as a result will not be taken down. Creators, if it’s currently playable in the build, go forth and do your thing.”

Players seem generally pleased that Bungie is going to do its best to preserve Marathon‘s surprises, which include new content dropping throughout the month, rather than let leaks spread like wildfire across subreddits and Discords. “Just issuing this statement makes me hopeful that the surprises and events in the game are gonna be big and meaningful,” wrote one fan on the subreddit. “Hope Bungie takes everything they’ve learned from Destiny and gives us some insane secrets to find.”

Big community puzzles were a long-time signature of Bungie’s prior releases, as were dataminers trying to scavenge through game code for secrets and clues about future updates. It’s always been a bit of a cat-and-mouse game with that stuff, and in some cases Bungie has tolerated more than most live-service publishers would as long as the leaks were kept in the less traveled corners of the internet.

With Marathon, it seems to be preparing to take a stricter approach. The preemptive warnings might not scare off the most dedicated dataminers, but it’ll probably dissuade most of the bigger content creators and community members from loudly and voraciously sharing any leaks that do sprout up in the days ahead. Maybe. We’ll see.
