Masters of Albion Finally Has a Release Date

Masters of Albion, a new ‘God game’ from the genre’s creator Peter Molyneux, has just received a release date of April 22, 2026. Masters of Albion was first announced in August 2024 during Gamescom Opening Night Live, and according to the man himself, it will be the last video game Peter Molyneux will ever work on.

A game designer, programmer, and executive producer, the England-based Peter Molyneux kicked off his lengthy gaming career with a 1984 game fittingly titled The Entrepreneur. Despite The Entrepreneur being a severe commercial failure, Molyneux ended up founding Bullfrog Productions a few years later with business partner Les Edgar, where he created the very first ‘God game,’ 1989’s Populous, along with Theme Park, Syndicate, and Dungeon Keeper.

Bullfrog Productions was eventually merged into EA UK in 2004, and Peter Molyneux left the company to co-found Lionhead Studios. At Lionhead, Molyneux created the next evolution of God games with Black & White, as well as the beloved action-RPG series Fable. Molyneux left Lionhead in 2012 following the development of Fable: The Journey, and created a third studio, 22cans, where he’s still working today.

Masters of Albion Gets an April 22, 2026 Release Date

Described on the official Steam page as “a bold reimagining of the God Game genre, from the creator who defined it,” Masters of Albion will see players take control of an ethereal hand that’s able to place buildings, pick up and move workers, and attack monsters who threaten the village it creates. Players will also be able to possess individual workers, animals, and heroes to engage in third-person exploration and combat.

On January 12, Masters of Albion received a new trailer that officially confirmed an April 22, 2026 release date for the god game. The game will initially release exclusively on PC via Steam, though console versions have been mentioned by the studio previously. The trailer also states that the game will release specifically at 6pm BST on April 22, which would mean that it launches at 12pm ET/10am PT if it’s released simultaneously around the world.

This new trailer also gave fans their best look yet at Masters of Albion‘s gameplay loop, which consists of two key parts. The first half of Masters of Albion‘s loop takes place during the day, and sees players building their town, exploring the world, and fulfilling their townsfolk’s quests. The second half takes place at night, and sees players defending their custom town from undead monsters, using both the heroes they’ve recruited and environmental hazards and traps like exploding barrels.

Upon Masters of Albion‘s announcement in August 2024, Peter Molyneux was interviewed by Edge (which was reported on by PCGamer). In this interview, Molyneux discussed his rather notorious history of overpromising in the lead up to a game’s release, and made the bold statement that Masters of Albion would be his final game. As Molyneux put it:

“Masters of Albion is a redemption title for me. But also, it’s my last game…I’m 66 years old. I’m working as hard as I’ve ever worked in my life. And I just haven’t got the life energy left to do this again.”

While some fans believe that this statement is in and of itself a potential marketing ploy for Masters of Albion, similar to the overpromises Molyneux has used in the past with games like Fable, it’s very possible that Masters of Albion will in fact be the game designer’s last ever game. And if that turns out to be true, then there’s even more pressure for Masters of Albion to deliver the “bold reimagining of the God game genre” that it’s purporting itself to be.
