Metro 2039 Officially Revealed, “Changed” by Russian Invasion of Ukraine

4A Games has officially revealed Metro 2039, the next mainline entry in its long-running post-apocalyptic franchise and the first core installment since 2019’s Metro Exodus. Announced as part of a dedicated showcase, the game confirms recent reports of a sequel while offering a detailed look at its story, tone, and direction. As the fourth major entry in the series, Metro 2039 continues the franchise’s focus on a narrative-driven, single-player experience rooted in survival, atmosphere, and immersive world design.

However, the most significant aspect of Metro 2039‘s reveal is how dramatically its development changed in response to real-world events. According to 4A Games in an interview with Xbox Wire, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine fundamentally altered both the studio’s reality and the game itself, with executive producer Jon Bloch saying, “Everything we had planned for the next chapter of Metro changed.” Much of the team has continued working while based in Ukraine or scattered across multiple countries, adapting to power outages, displacement, and the uncertainty of an active war. What was initially envisioned as a continuation of the series has since evolved into something that hits closer to home for the developers, directly influenced by the experiences of a team still closely tied to Ukraine and working under difficult conditions.

Metro Author Teases New Detail About Upcoming 2039 Game

Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the Metro book series, teases an exciting story detail about the recently confirmed Metro 2039 game.

A Return to the Metro, Grounded in Reality

Set once again within the tunnels of the Moscow Metro, Metro 2039 marks a deliberate return to the series’ roots after Metro Exodus took its traditional gameplay loop into a larger, semi-open world. The game introduces a new protagonist known as The Stranger, a fully voiced lead character who is drawn back into the Metro despite trying to leave that life behind. The setting itself seems to be a much more unified but oppressive world, with the factions of previous Metro games now consolidated under a fascist regime, reinforcing the game’s darker tone and political undertones.

Gameplay footage shown during the reveal highlights a return to the series’ iconic tension and methodical pacing, with combat once again emphasizing limited resources, weapon maintenance, and careful decision-making where even basic actions like firing a weapon are risky if the player’s equipment isn’t properly maintained. Encounters with returning Metro creatures like the Nosalis should increase that sense of vulnerability as well, while exploration is still a central part of the experience, encouraging players to move cautiously through each environment while paying attention to every detail.

As it has been with almost every Metro game to date, that slower pace is largely about how the series and now Metro 2039 approach environmental storytelling and atmosphere. As 4A Games described it in their interview with Xbox Wire, the team was focused on building “frozen stories” into each location. Rather than relying heavily on dialogue or exposition, the game’s environment has been carefully constructed to reflect the lives of those who once inhabited them, allowing players to piece together smaller stories through observation. Again, this design philosophy builds on the series’ established DNA, but it does push it even further toward a more human-focused portrayal of its world.

Technologically, Metro 2039 continues to utilize 4A Games’ proprietary engine, which has evolved over more than a decade alongside the series. The studio has emphasized its ability to push visual fidelity and lighting, building on the ray tracing advancements introduced in Metro Exodus. However, the defining element of Metro 2039 is, without a doubt, its thematic direction. Where previous entries focused on the idea of preventing war, this installment reflects what it means to endure it, with a stronger emphasis on consequence, survival, and the cost of freedom. At its heart, though, it’s not a creative decision so much as it is a reflection of the reality the developers themselves have faced, giving Metro 2039 a perspective that feels more personal and grounded in reality than anything the series has attempted before.
