Developer 4A Games has finally announced the official release date of Metro 2039, the next entry in the post-apocalyptic first-person horror franchise. Announced during the September Sony State of Play, Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027.
Based on the novel series by Dmitry Glukhovsky, the Metro video game franchise made its debut in 2010 with Metro 2033. In the 16 years since, Metro has released a total of three mainline entries, a remastered duology, and a full-fledged VR spinoff. A fourth mainline entry in the series, Metro 2039, was officially announced back in April, and its first gameplay footage was released during Gamescom Opening Night Live last week.
Metro 2039 Launches February 4, 2027
Metro 2039 received its official February 4, 2027 release date at the end of a brand-new gameplay trailer that debuted during the latest PlayStation State of Play. Captured on PlayStation 5 Pro, this new Metro 2039 gameplay trailer begins with the player-character making his way through a rundown apartment block. As can be expected, he quickly runs into a small army of enemy soldiers, whom he dispatches easily with a kitted-out assault rifle and a scavenged shotgun.

Around three minutes of largely unedited gameplay footage was shown during the latest Metro 2039 trailer, giving fans their best look at the first-person shooter yet. Generally speaking, Metro 2039 appears to play very similarly to past entries, with the trailer footage showing familiar, albeit refined, shooting and survival mechanics. Similarly, Metro 2039 seems to be embracing the grounded tone and realistic visual style of its predecessors, which looks better than ever thanks to the next-generation lighting effects and textures that 4A Games is employing.
A recent post on the PlayStation Blog sheds some more light on Metro 2039‘s technical features. According to 4A Games’ Head of Brand, Robbie Cooke, Metro 2039 will deliver ray tracing and “smooth 60fps” on both PS5 and PS5 Pro via a dedicated performance mode. Cooke also confirmed that Metro 2039 is another entry that’s running on the developer’s own proprietary technology, the 4A Engine, which delivered ray tracing and 60fps with the launch of Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition on PS5.
February 2027 is fast becoming a very busy time for the video game industry. As things currently stand, Metro 2039 will lead the charge on February 4, 2027, but it’ll be quickly followed by Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, and Fable. While all four of these games will offer very different gameplay experiences, they’ll still be fighting for attention early next year. Metro 2039 will also be surrounded by some high-profile releases in the months preceding and following its launch. Ananta and Stranger Than Heaven are currently set to launch on the same day in January 2027, while No Rest for the Wicked and Exodus are dropping in March and April, respectively.
