Microsoft Reveals More Details on Next-Generation Xbox Console “Project Helix”

Microsoft Reveals More Details on Next-Generation Xbox Console “Project Helix”

While it is nowhere near releasing, it seems Microsoft and Xbox are opening up more and more to talking about their next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix. Fans should keep all expectations in check, as talk now does not always equate to reality later, and this is by no means talk meant to push or sell Xbox consoles to consumers. Instead, the most recent messaging is aimed at developers.

While rumors of the next Xbox console had surfaced sparsely in recent months, the first public acknowledgment of Project Helix by Xbox and Microsoft happened earlier this March by new Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma, following Phil Spencer’s recent retirement. Sharma claimed that the Project Helix console will “lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games.” Sharma also confirmed that Project Helix would be discussed at this month’s Game Developers Conference, or GDC 2026.

You Might Be Able to Play Marvel’s Spider-Man or God of War Ragnarok on the Next-Gen Xbox

As Xbox shifts its hardware strategy, a lot of players are feeling left behind, but there could be at least one strong, albeit bizarre, upside.

The keyword there is Developers, as it is more of a technical talk than selling points on the next generation of Xbox. Xbox VP of Next-Gen Jason Ronald went over some of the enhancements being made to the console, as outlined below. It has been previously reported by Moore’s Law is Dead that the Xbox console could cost $1000—this is not direct messaging from Xbox or Microsoft—but would represent a massive step forward from a technical standpoint.

The technical language isn’t going to mean much to the lay consumer, where perhaps the more alarming news is the touted price point. Moore’s Law is Dead stated that the Xbox console could easily be $1000 but would not cost more than $1500, and while the price may come down somehow or someway, the recent and ongoing RAM Crisis is widely expected to influence the cost and release of this Xbox. Neither Microsoft nor Xbox has stated anything in regards to specific price decisions or the memory shortage yet.

Beyond the technical elements, Ronald stated that alpha devkits for Project Helix would go out to developers starting in 2027. That doesn’t lock Project Helix out of a 2027 release window, but it does mean developers will have a short time (if at all) to optimize for the new console. However, given that Helix will run Xbox and PC games, it’s unclear how much of a factor this is for the console’s launch. Rumors and industry chatter have suggested that both Project Helix and PS6 will release in 2027, though there are plenty of naysayers. Of course, there’s plenty of time between now and then. Other key details regarding Xbox’s GDC talk include the game preservation team announcing that classic games will release later this year “to be played in entirely new ways” and a new Xbox experience coming to Windows 11 in April 2026.

Xbox Asha Sharma

The latter makes sense, as ahead of Project Helix’s release, it seems likely that Microsoft and Xbox intend to tear down the wall between Xbox and PC. That’s not to say there will never be Xbox exclusive games again, as fans asked Sharma for them to come back shortly after her appointment, but it’s uncertain how or if that fits into the CEO’s vision for the future of Xbox. Right now, nothing is known about its competitor in the PS6, nor is anything officially confirmed regarding the PS6 or Project Helix’s release windows. Fans may learn more at the end of this year or early next year, especially if 2027 is in the plans.
