Modders Are Recreating Baldur’s Gate 1 in Baldur’s Gate 3

Modders Are Recreating Baldur’s Gate 1 in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 players are going to get a comprehensive remake of Baldur’s Gate 1 as a mod, though not anytime soon, according to the team of volunteers that’s taken up the project. Widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time, Baldur’s Gate 3 might not have the sheer modding capabilities of a first-party sandbox Bethesda RPG like Skyrim, but that isn’t stopping modders from attempting one of the most complex jobs they could possibly have taken up.

Whereas modding-first games like Oblivion or Skyrim are often renowned specifically for their flexibility and customization options, Baldur’s Gate 3 first made a name for itself by being an excellent game without any mods or modding prospects. Produced by Larian Studios of Divinity fame, it’s a landmark CRPG that generally continues the narrative beats shown in Baldur’s Gate 1, 2, and their expansion packs. Still, it stands on its own two feet as an RPG that doesn’t require prior knowledge of its predecessors, which has made it a great onboarding option for people that might never have played the old classics.

After 392 Hours in Baldur’s Gate 3, I Still Regret Recruiting This Party Member

While I initially liked this character and their story, I ultimately regretted adding them to my party in Baldur’s Gate 3, and here’s why.

Deathbringer’s Reign Is Remaking Baldur’s Gate 1, With the Prologue Already Available

A team that’s come to be known under the moniker Deathbringer’s Reign, led by modder 786r786, has begun the long, arduous job of recreating Baldur’s Gate 1 in Baldur’s Gate 3. This is based on the immediately available and playable Candlekeep prologue, with the next major goal being to add High Hedge, Beregost, the Friendly Arm Inn, and Shipwreck’s Coast in a future update. Those that enjoyed the first Baldur’s Gate will remember many of these places as iconic early-level exploration opportunities, but for Deathbringer’s Reign this is an immense feat that is much more complicated than the majority of other Baldur’s Gate 3 mods. Popular examples include the reintroduction of the cut Early Access Baldur’s Gate 3 dialogue, which was a big job for the author in and of itself.

In an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, 786r786 shared that “the sheer scale [of the project] is daunting,” in the sense that the first Baldur’s Gate game has a much more comprehensive rendition of the city of Baldur’s Gate itself than the third title does. “Without a doubt, the most significant challenge will be translating the city of Baldur’s Gate itself into a fully 3D environment,” 786r786 said. “The original game has over 100 interiors within the city, whereas BG3 features about 40 buildings in the Lower City. We have to figure out how to capture that content density while adjusting the layout to suit BG3’s modern gameplay and presentation.” The project is of the same scope as the legendary Skyblivion remake for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, from the look of things.

Baldur's Gate 3 Character Faces Enemies

Deathbringer’s Reign intends to remake as much as possible of the original Baldur’s Gate, but some bits and pieces will need to be modified to work in the context of Baldur’s Gate 3. For example, whereas the majority of the first game’s dialogue will be included, it might get “heavily tweaked or altered for better cinematic flow,” so fans shouldn’t necessarily expect a perfect 1:1 remake. While it’s certainly going to take a long time before this project is fully complete, it offers the logical next big thing to be excited about for those that aren’t keen on HBO’s official Baldur’s Gate 3 adaptation, for one.

Naturally, the project faces steep challenges that could significantly delay or complicate its production. There’s no official release date announced, and the team is still actively seeking volunteers, so it may be quite some time before players can experience the next chapter of the unofficial remake. In the interim, Larian Studios continues to update Baldur’s Gate 3, fixing annoying bugs years after the game’s early access release.
