Modern Warfare 4 Brings Back Controversial Weapon With a Twist

Fans should be warned that the riot shield is returning to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4; however, Infinity Ward has stated that there have been some changes to the controversial weapon. The recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 reveal event disclosed plenty of details about what’s new with the next entry in the series, and it seems like big changes are coming.

Modern Warfare 4 was revealed on May 28, 2026, now returning to fan favorite characters Captain Price and Ghost as they barrel towards a showdown while the rest of the world is engaged in a global conflict sparked by North Korea’s invasion of South Korea. At a glance, it seems like everything is set for this to be another globe-trotting, gritty Call of Duty campaign, with all the familiar fixings of the franchise that fans are used to. On the multiplayer side of things, Infinity Ward seems to be shaking up the formula a bit with reworked movement mechanics and some interesting updates to hip firing, along with changes to fan favorite (or fan despised) weapons.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Levels Are Based on YouTube Videos

In a recent interview, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s campaign directors revealed that some of the game’s levels were made using YouTube footage.

The Riot Shield Is Back in Modern Warfare 4, but with Some Limits

However, as much as things change, things also stay the same, especially when it comes to the riot shield being back in yet another Modern Warfare entry. As reported by CharlieIntel after the recent Modern Warfare 4 reveal event, the riot shield is, in fact, back again to haunt every corner of every map in the game, but thankfully, it is now totally destructible. This means that those pesky corner campers won’t be able to sit and turtle for the entirety of a multiplayer match unless they want to have their shields broken and their corner compromised.

The riot shield has been a controversial staple of the Call of Duty franchise since 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, often cited as a point of frustration for fans, as riot shield users tend to camp corners and require grenades or a backstab to take down. Fans say that encountering riot shield users always kills the player’s momentum and, in short, is just a hassle to deal with when players just want to run and gun. For those reasons, it seems like the riot shield is doing its job as intended, but at least in Modern Warfare 4, players will finally be able to destroy the thing at some point. How this huge change to the riot shield will affect how players use it remains to be seen, but it has certainly lost one of its greatest strengths.

Other details disclosed at the recent Modern Warfare 4 event include Ninja being back as a perk, the return of Theater Mode, and confirmation that the campaign will be playable offline. That last tidbit has been an important one for fans, as Black Ops 7 drew plenty of criticism for its online-only campaign, even outside of co-op. Although it seems like the burning question on the Call of Duty community’s mind is whether Modern Warfare 4 has Skill-Based Matchmaking, which Infinity Ward is currently staying quiet on.

There are still plenty of reveals on the way for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as the Summer Game Fest season kicks off. The game releases on October 23, 2026, and will also mark the franchise’s big return to a Nintendo console on day-and-date. Previews for the game are incredibly positive so far, with many reviewers stating that this year’s Call of Duty feels much fresher and more thought-out than previous entries in the series. Regardless of where fans stand on the riot shield, there seems to be plenty more to love coming soon for the franchise’s fans.
