Modern Warfare 4 Reveals DMZ Setting and More Details

After the confirmation that the DMZ mode will be making its return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward revealed new details including where it takes place and the living world players will be dropping into. While the original DMZ never really seemed to reach its potential, Infinity Ward is taking another swing at the mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and this time around, it sounds like it may just be what fans were hoping to see originally.

Rumors had been swirling for a while now about DMZ making its return and after the reveal of Modern Warfare 4 in May, Infinity Ward finally confirmed it. Originally making its debut in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, DMZ was never able to leave its initial beta phase before being sidelined in successive games in the series. While multiplayer and Warzone continued to thrive, DMZ seemed to suffer from a lack of structure, long-term progression, and ultimately a reason to keep logging into the mode. However, it seems Infinity Ward has taken that feedback to heart as the new version of DMZ aims to be something greater.

Infinity Ward studio head Mark Grigsby promises transparency over how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 handles its matchmaking, with news expected soon.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Details

In a lengthy new blog post, Infinity Ward pulled the curtain back on this new version of DMZ and what players can expect this time around. For this version of the extraction mode, players will be heading to an exclusion zone bordering Russian and the Korean Peninsula called Hajin. Taking place after the events of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, the area is contested over the surplus of abandoned military tech, stockpiles of weapons, and other assets just waiting to be claimed.

However, part of what makes the return of DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 more enticing than its predecessor is how Infinity Ward has attempted to make Hajin feel like a living world, something that changes each time a player enters it. That starts with environmental effects that can happen at random, from sudden downpours, rolling fog, and more weather effects which can change the opportunities and challenges over the course of each run.

Weather is just the start of it, as Infinity Ward has also created multiple paths of progression players can follow, from story missions, free exploration, as well as dynamic operations. The latter element is multistep objectives that are generated for each match and are intended to build around tension, large-scale moments, and replayability.

The blog post also outlined Infinity Ward’s focused attempt to build out a living world with emergent enemies and the idea of escalating threats. The former has been achieved by improving the AI of enemy soldiers found throughout Hajin. Players will see better coordination and highly reactive soldiers to apply pressure to players. As a result, Infinity Ward is aiming for combat that feels more active and unpredictable. The area also has a threat system that essentially tracks player activity and escalates things as necessary by mobilizing more troops, helicopters, armored units, and if things get really out of hand, soldiers known as Deathstalkers to actively hunt down players.

For now, it seems that Infinity Ward is saying all the right things, learning from mistakes in the past that the series has experienced. Part of that extends to the reliance on cosmetics and collaborations, which have seemingly leaned heavier into the realm of unrealistic and a bit outrageous. Already, the studio has confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will be focusing on grounded and authentic cosmetics and collaborations. If Infinity Ward sticks to those promises, it seems highly unlikely that Seth Rogen, Bevis and Butthead, or Nicki Minaj will be dropping back onto the battlefield again anytime soon.
