While fans were hoping for some GTA 6 news ahead of Take-Two’s Earnings Call on August 7, no one could have predicted that Netflix would be hosting an extended look at the game on August 27. Indeed, the next major Grand Theft Auto 6 update will require fans to pay for, sign into, and watch whatever it is (probably trailers, gameplay, and more) at 12 pm PT/3 pm on August 27.
The reaction to this GTA 6 news has been understandably mixed. Many are just excited to know when they’re going to learn more about the open-world crime action game. Many are upset that there’s a near 3-week wait for that date, especially since Rockstar marketing has been barebones so far, while several others are upset that this upcoming update is locked behind a paywall (it comes to YouTube about 6 hours after). A lot of gamers probably have Netflix, but not everyone does, not in this economy, so there’s been a high level of criticism applied to this move.
Netflix on Grand Theft Auto 6: Extended Look

Netflix has released a statement on GTA 6’s Extended Look release, although of course it does not address pretty much any of the criticism levied against it. Describing the deal with Rockstar Games as a “first-of-its-kind partnership,” it detailed the history of the two companies as if they were related. GTA 5 released in 2013—the same year Netflix claims its push into original programming began—and how the deal between the two companies, apparently because of this factoid, embodies a collaboration that “represents the next generation of storytelling and content on Netflix.” In other words, it sounds like Netflix wants to host more major marketing push for video games, or at least cultural moments. As Netflix VP of Nonfiction Series Brandon Reigg said,
“Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto 6 is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

Presumably, this extended look at GTA 6 is the one-and-only debut on Netflix, but it sounds possible that it’s a series or documentary-style marketing. That speculation aside, Netflix’s comments highly suggest it intends to do more releases like this that explore “the most ambitious storytelling from any medium,” but it remains to be seen what, if anything, follows GTA 6.
Netflix is quite proud of the partnership, as it should be, because it offers Netflix subscribers the first chance to see an in-depth exploration of the game. Netflix’s words also suggest more is coming on GTA 6‘s story, with fans having little more than the general description of it right now: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida – forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”
Grand Theft Auto 6 officially releases November 19, barring any more delays, but such a grand debut on Netflix communicates a level of confidence in its current release date. Its release is only getting closer and closer.
