While its title obviously indicates that it’s a Survivors-like game with a similar offering of bullet heaven combat, Voxie Survivor’s visual style is more comparable to Minecraft than anything else. Minecraft is one of the most successful games of all time for a range of reasons, such as its use as an educational tool and an iconic selection of mobs, but it’s hard to imagine it becoming what it is without its signature blocky art style. While not everything in this PC game’s world is cubic, the squares that players fight on and especially the character models will make many players think of Mojang’s legendary IP.

Voxie Survivor’s Gameplay Has All the Vampire Survivors Staples
Voxie Survivors’ Minecraft-like game aesthetic pairs nicely with its similar approach to storytelling, as each session of gameplay sees players piecing together bits and pieces of some surprisingly deep lore. Mechanically, though, Voxie’s namesake comes into play, as Vampire Survivors’ influence is truly everywhere. Those who love autoshooting tons of projectiles at hordes of foes will be right at home in this game, with a crit system allowing for some huge bursts of damage from time to time. A “snappy” dodge mechanic will be added as well, allowing for tight movements and the freedom to capitalize on small windows to attack.
When it comes to enemies, players can expect to deal with skeletons, gigantic looming zombies, slimes, mushrooms, and more. Apex bosses will also be included, such as a giant dragon entity that just so happens to resemble Minecraft’s Ender Dragon, albeit with white scales instead of black ones. All of these enemies won’t be pushovers, as developer AlwaysGeeky Games has promised that the enemy AI will use all the player’s movement against them, flowing around environmental obstacles to catch the protagonist off guard. Like Vampire Survivors, Voxie Survivor will be simplistic on the surface and easy to get into, but long-term, it will genuinely challenge gamers.

To truly work as a Survivors-like game, though, Voxie needs build variety. And, fortunately, it seems that it will have that variety in spades. In addition to permanent upgrades that can be applied between runs using cores and shards plucked from dead enemies, there will apparently be 45 unique weapon combinations to experiment with. Examples given include bouncing blades that ricochet through the horde of blocky foes and an ability to slam the earth below the player character to shatter the voxel creatures as they close in. Players will pull weapon cards mid-run to essentially re-roll the main element of their setup, keeping things fresh as the fights get tougher.

While it’s impossible to recapture the perfect storm of Vampire Survivors launching alongside a new on-the-go console, there’s no denying how well games like this pair with platforms like the Steam Deck.
