New Animal Crossing Meets PaRappa the Rapper Game on Steam Had My Head Bobbing

New Animal Crossing Meets PaRappa the Rapper Game on Steam Had My Head Bobbing

My latest journey through Steam in search of another great upcoming indie game to get excited about eventually led me to Clay Game Studio and SOEDESCO’s Mirth Island, which I can only describe as a charming little mixture of Animal Crossing and PaRappa the Rapper. Comparing this game to PaRappa the Rapper might not mean much to you, but the standard modern comparison drawn when it comes to rhythm games is Guitar Hero, and Mirth Island just isn’t that. Rather, it’s closer to PaRappa in its character-driven approach to rhythm gameplay, where each song is either tied to a quest or an interaction with its NPCs. Plus, PaRappa is widely credited with helping establish the rhythm-game genre as we know it today, so it’s due the recognition it rarely gets anymore on account of its age.

After having a panic attack and passing out during an audition at the beginning of Mirth Island‘s demo, our lead character, Dodo the duck, ventures back to his hometown on Mirth Island, feeling dejected as he believes his future as a stage performer is done for. From there, the game’s primary setting begins to open up, and Dodo reconnects with his childhood friends Vivi and Rita before discovering that the town’s once-beloved theater has been left in ruins. That gives him something new to work toward, as he begins helping the island’s residents with their everyday problems, recruiting new members for the theater, and taking part in rhythm-based mini-games along the way, all with the eventual goal of bringing the stage back to life. It has the cute-animal and “rebuild-the-island” energy of Animal Crossing and the head-bobbing tunes of PaRappa the Rapper, and it’s coming to Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch sometime later this year.

Mirth Island Blends Cozy Life Sim Gameplay With Rhythm Better Than I Expected

Check Out Mirth Island‘s Demo on Steam

At first, I was a little thrown off by the fact that, during my audition at the beginning of Mirth Island‘s demo, Dodo was complaining about not doing well despite me hitting every note perfectly. It wasn’t difficult, by any means, and yet Dodo still allowed his nerves to get to him, eventually passing out on stage in front of three judges he imagined were towering over him. It was his anxiety, he admitted, which I can relate to perfectly. I’ve never been shy about being on stage, but I have experienced panic attacks before, and they are indeed awful. At the very least, however, Dodo’s song was beautiful and genuinely moving, effectively selling me on this adorable pastel-colored world that I’d then spend another half hour or so with during the demo.

Let me be clear that Mirth Island is not a rhythm game, and that, to me, makes it better. This is a cozy, casual, Animal Crossing-like adventure with rhythm-game interactions akin to those in PaRappa the Rapper, so don’t expect to just be making your way through the game on the backs of music notes alone. Mirth Island has a heartwarming little story, an instantly memorable cast of characters, humorous, lighthearted dialogue, and plenty of rhythm-based mini-games and optional activities. All of this, of course, is merely based on my very brief time with the game’s demo, but it was enough to make me add it to my Steam wishlist and look forward to its release.

Mirth Island’s Key Features

  • COZY ISLAND EXPLORATION – Explore colorful environments filled with charming locals and cute animals.
  • RHYTHM-BASED MINI-GAMES – Complete musical challenges woven directly into quests and character interactions.
  • WHOLESOME QUESTS – Help island residents with problems and strengthen Dodo’s community ties.
  • THEATER RESTORATION – Rebuild the island’s abandoned theater and bring its stage back.
  • PERFORMER RECRUITMENT – Recruit talented performers to help restore Mirth Island’s theater.
  • HEARTWARMING STORY – Follow Dodo as he finds new purpose after failure.

Despite the demo being brief, I still had a great time, and there was plenty for me to do that, by the end of it all, made me well acquainted with Mirth Island. Its characters, in particular, are probably what stuck with me the most, because the conversations I had with them actually felt like conversations. The dialogue was funny without trying too hard, and none of it came across like I was just clicking through robotic NPC chatter to get to my next objective. Watching how these characters talked to Dodo and to one another made the island feel like an actual place with people who had known each other long before I showed up, which went a long way toward making me want to keep talking to everyone I came across.

I especially appreciated that Mirth Island doesn’t just dump all of its side quests onto the map for you. If you want to find some of them, you actually need to talk to the island’s residents and see what they have going on. I love that approach because it makes everything feel much more relationship-based than simply running down a checklist of icons, and there was a nice little sense of discovery whenever a normal conversation suddenly turned into something I could help with. Some of those quests had me playing another rhythm mini-game, while others were as simple as finding something around the island and bringing it back to whoever asked for it.

The rhythm games themselves were another highlight, especially once I realized I was actually moving along with the music while also trying to hit the right keys on time. The soundtrack is cozy, laid-back, and relaxing, and when you combine that with the game’s colorful presentation, the whole thing has this warm atmosphere that is incredibly easy to settle into. Even better, once you’ve completed a song through the story or a side quest, you can go back and play a harder version of it, which gives those sequences some life beyond their first appearance.

I didn’t get far enough into the demo to actually see the Mirth Theater restored, but I did get to start that part of Dodo’s journey, and that was more than enough to make me want to see where it goes. If you’re into Animal Crossing, PaRappa the Rapper, or just charming games that immediately feel like a place you want to spend more time in, Mirth Island is absolutely one to keep an eye on. I only spent around half an hour with it, and somehow, I already miss the place.

Mirth Island launches on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in 2026.
