A brand-new co-op hide-and-seek game called Hollow Hide has appeared on Steam, and it looks strikingly similar to Meccha Chameleon, the latest viral friendslop title on the platform. What makes this potential copycat case unusual is that Meccha Chameleon has only been available for just over a month, making it one of the fastest examples of a similar game appearing on Steam.
In fact, SteamDB data suggests that some of the earliest activity recorded for Hollow Hide dates back to June 26, roughly 17 days after Meccha Chameleon‘s successful release. Even more surprising is that the new co-op game is scheduled to launch as early as August 20, 2026, raising questions about its development process.

Based on Hollow Hide‘s official trailer, the game appears to replace Meccha Chameleon‘s painting mechanics with temporary invisibility. This ability lets “hiders” automatically blend into their surroundings. The rest of the gameplay loop, however, looks strikingly similar to Meccha Chameleon. Developed by Renderise, the co-op hide-and-seek asymmetrical multiplayer game is slated to release on August 20, 2026.
Players are split into two teams: hiders and the hunter. Like most asymmetrical multiplayer games, Hollow Hide tasks one side with stopping the other. The hunter must find and eliminate the hiders using a variety of firearms, while the hiders can work together to distract the hunter or use magic to disappear and throw off their pursuer.

Hollow Hide even appears to borrow Meccha Chameleon‘s whistle mechanic. Its official Steam description states, “Hear maniacal laughter? That means [the hiders] are nearby.” Players familiar with Meccha Chameleon will recognize the similarity. In that game, the hiding team is forced to reveal clues about its location every few seconds through unavoidable whistles, which serves much the same purpose as the “maniacal laughter” in Hollow Hide. Several other features in Hollow Hide, including the minions’ taunt and pose mechanics, also appear to closely resemble Meccha Chameleon‘s gameplay. However, developer Renderise has yet to comment on these similarities as of this writing.
Hollow Hide Might Already Be in Hot Water
Players haven’t reacted positively to Hollow Hide, with many calling it another copycat game that lacks originality. One user described it as “Meccha Chameleon minus the charm,” while another commented, “So, [Meccha Chameleon] with people afraid to paint? OK.” It’s still too early to tell whether the game will find success on Steam or introduce meaningful twists to Meccha Chameleon‘s formula. For now, however, the overall community sentiment appears to be largely negative.
With Meccha Chameleon‘s sales surpassing 15 million copies on Steam, it’s safe to assume that more copycats and near-identical games will emerge to target the same audience. This is hardly a new trend, as most successful indie games on Steam eventually attract imitators. For example, when Schedule 1 began drawing thousands of players, a wave of copycats appeared across other storefronts, particularly the PlayStation Store. If anything, an influx of lookalikes is often a sign that a game has become hugely popular and successful.
