Discord has released a new update that increases the file size limit of uploads on the platform for free users. The change follows backlash dating back to 2024, as Discord reduced the upload size limit considerably back then.
Although it took quite a while for Discord to be made available on platforms like PlayStation, the chat program has been extremely popular for a long time. Discord got its start because of Final Fantasy, but has grown dramatically since, allowing players to communicate freely with others, share their game screens, broadcast their activities, and more. However, a change made back in 2024 was an unpopular one, and is now finally being addressed.
Discord Increases Upload File Size Limit for Free Users
Discord has now announced that the upload file size limit for free users has been increased to 20MB, effective immediately. Previously, Discord users who weren’t subscribed to Nitro or Nitro Basic were limited to just 10MB, which made sharing files more difficult for those who didn’t pay extra for the service. While free users will likely be happy about the increased limit, adjustments aren’t being made to Nitro Basic and Nitro, the two paid Discord tiers. Unless Discord makes a change in the future, subscribers are still limited to 50MB uploads for Nitro Basic and 500MB for Nitro.

Long-time Discord users may recall that at one time, users were able to upload more than 20MB for free. Back in 2024, Discord adjusted its limits, bringing the upload file size maximum down from 25MB to just 10MB. Discord claimed at the time that most users were uploading files smaller than 10MB, so it wouldn’t have much of an impact, but the userbase nonetheless complained about the change. At the time, Discord claimed that the change was being made due to cost, as Discord maintains the files once they’re uploaded. Recent increases in the cost of hardware have led many services to increase their prices, so it’s a bit surprising to see Discord go in the opposite direction.

This isn’t the only change that’s been made to Discord in recent history, with the company adding a major new incentive to sign up for its paid service: Xbox Game Pass. Discord and Xbox teamed up earlier in 2026, and added the Starter tier of Xbox Game Pass as a free perk for those subscribed to Discord Nitro. On the flip side, Xbox Game Pass subscribers get free Discord perks like Discord Orbs and shop discounts. Discord Nitro Basic users don’t gain the same benefits, as the tier costs just $2.99 per month versus Discord Nitro’s standard price of $9.99 a month.
Though many responding to the news have been pleased at the increased file size limit, others have wondered why the limit wasn’t simply restored to what it was before the 2024 change. Discord has increased other limits in recent history, like the Discord servers increasing in size, but left the file size limit untouched at the time. Still, this should make it easier for Discord users to share files with one another without having to pay anything, which many will likely be happy to take advantage of, regardless of the platform’s reasons.
