While it’s not quite as viral as it once was, R.E.P.O. is still enjoyed by many, and its initial burst of popularity can’t be understated. Taking the internet by storm due to its goofy bean-shaped characters and the built-in potential for hilarious internet clips, it’s no surprise that indie developers would want to recreate the success of semiwork’s scary-yet-silly project. One Steam title that clearly follows in the footsteps of R.E.P.O. is Last Pirates: Die Together, but it’s not a direct copy. Sure, its character models are similarly charming, and it does seem poised to deliver its share of scares via some player-chasing monsters, but it also works extraction elements into its gameplay loop.
The rise of the extraction genre has been interesting to watch, as though its difficulty means it’s inherently niche, that hasn’t stopped studios from trying to put their own spin on the concept. Arc Raiders was a massive success, and while other games have failed to make the same splash, there have still been some high-profile attempts. Bungie’s Marathon is one such example, as is Call of Duty’s Endgame mode, and with a Halo extraction shooter rumored, more games in this style can be expected. For Steam players who like this anxiety-inducing genre, Last Pirates: Die Together could be even more appealing than a normal friendslop game — and those who are interested don’t have long to try it.

Last Pirates: Die Together puts players in the shoes of a greedy ship captain’s lackeys, with the clumsy shipmates being thrown onto a creepy island to loot everything that’s not nailed to the floor. To do their looting, they’ll utilize a grabbing tool just like in R.E.P.O., though said tool is really just their oddly stretchy arms. With their arms, players can destroy pieces of the island, rip doors apart, and grab furniture that can be carried and tossed to their escape boat. Getting out with this loot will be no easy task, though, as players will encounter plenty of threats in Silent Cove.

While players will be trying to loot and flee from a coastal locale just like in the hit extraction game Escape from Tarkov, the biggest threat in Last Pirates isn’t other players, but AI-controlled supernatural enemies. Ghostly sharks, creepy apparitions, sea monsters, and so on will block progress and chase after players, forcing the group to strategize at every turn. Sometimes, it may be best to have three players serve as distractions, letting one member of the group extract the valuable loot. Other times, working to find ways to stun enemies could be more viable.
Like R.E.P.O., this straightforward gameplay loop is elevated by a humorous aesthetic; characters fall and have their exposed buttocks on full display (with a bit of footage showing another player goofing off and smacking said cheeks), the player models boast silly faces with large eyes, and the extendable arms are expectedly odd-looking. As players successfully extract in Last Pirates, they’ll be able to collect a wide range of outfit pieces for their character, making them into the goofy pirate of their dreams.
Last Pirates’ Demo is Just a Piece of the Final Puzzle
Last Pirates’ demo is right around the corner, and though it’s fairly feature complete, it won’t have everything that’s included in the full Steam early access release. Players will only be able to explore the Silent Cove map and its abandoned manor, with other maps held until later. Additionally, not every interactable object planned for the game will be present in the demo build, meaning there will be more to destroy, collect, and use later on. Still, with the core mechanics present in the demo as well as four different monsters that react to sound and movement, it should be a fun experience that convinces potential players whether this particular game is a good fit for their friend group.
