New Factory Building Game on Steam is Factorio for Snacks

New Factory Building Game on Steam is Factorio for Snacks

Factorio has cultivated a passionate audience of problem solvers over the years, with said audience regularly seeking out automation alternatives that scratch the same itch. Some games in the genre try to do their own thing — a different camera perspective and visual style, combat mechanics like Steam’s Starminer, or exploration like Satisfactory are just a few examples of that approach. However, others try to be as close to Factorio as possible, being fully transparent about their homage. The aptly named game Snacktorio on Steam falls into the latter category, as it’s clearly aiming to evoke feelings of one of the genre’s best through its title, but it does still have a few things going for it.

One of the obvious traits that help this Steam title stand out is a focus on snacks, as you’ll have to manage ingredients alongside production if you want to thrive in Snacktorio. All the rewarding progression one would seek from the genre is present, as is an increasing level of challenge and complexity, allowing you to test yourself even when you’re in a flow state. Plus, with modding support, Snacktorio could be the gift that keeps on giving, as you’re able to create your own levels themed around your favorite food items from pop culture.

Snacktorio is Packed With Puzzles and Challenges

Stacktorio’s silly premise of feeding monsters to stop them from consuming the world drives home the fun tone that’s present throughout its automation gameplay. At the request of the head chef, you’re tasked with building automated food factories that prove your status as a “Witchelin Star” chef, with monsters constantly having demands for different kinds of food. To satisfy the creatures’ diverse palettes, you’ll have to set up a series of different machines, ranging from ovens, mixers, boilers, and fryers to sorters and connectors like pipes.

Aside from the actual building, those trying the Snacktorio demo on Steam (or the full version next month) will have a lot of ingredient traits to keep in mind. Timing, contamination, allergens, spoilage, and “other quirks” will all have to be taken into consideration, and these are only some of the rules, as specific food also behaves differently. Dough rising and dairy curdling with heat adds to the stress, and with new dishes appearing often, you’ll have to be at the top of your game at all times.

As you “turn simple recipes into sprawling networks of pipes and machines,” you’ll eventually get comfortable with the gameplay loop. Once this comfort kicks in, Snacktorio will kick it into another gear to keep you on your toes, introducing some “weird” elements to your list of duties. Layered dessert conveyer belts, indigestion relief, infused liquids, void-powered machinery, and steam-based cooking are just some of the many mechanics listed in this section, and it’ll be interesting to see how wacky things get. With so much depth, this game is sure to be one that ends up on the Steam wishlists of automation lovers everywhere.

Snacktorio players will also be contributing to a good cause, as a portion of the profits will be generated to ending hunger via food banks and food waste prevention services.

Snacktorio’s Mods Could Be Game-Changing

While details are scarce on Snacktorio’s mod support, beyond the ability to create levels, it’s easy to imagine some truly awesome user-generated content. One obvious option could be centered around the Fallout franchise, putting players in control of a Nuka-Cola (or Sunset Sarsparilla) plant. Willy Wonka’s factory, one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants, Adventure Time’s Candy Kingdom — the list of potential themes for Snacktorio levels go on and on. Obviously, this depends on whether players can mod in their own assets, so it remains to be seen how much these levels could differ from the official ones made by developer ellraiser. But, at the very least, you can expect endless content for Snacktorio, with the lineup of levels expanding for as long as the game has an active community.
