New Final Fantasy 11 Update Makes The Game Worth Trying or Returning To

Square Enix recently confirmed that Final Fantasy 11, one of the oldest MMORPGs on the market today, will undergo a major shift with its free trial to be closer to what Final Fantasy 14 offers. The upcoming free trial change should give new and returning Final Fantasy 11 players a worthwhile reason to come back to Vana’diel.

Final Fantasy 11 has been a long-standing staple of the MMORPG genre since its 2002 launch. Despite the popularity of its younger counterpart, Final Fantasy 14, that has not stopped Final Fantasy 11 from receiving continuous updates. The launch of Final Fantasy 14‘s Echoes of Vana’diel alliance raid series has also benefited Final Fantasy 11. As of this writing, three of Final Fantasy 11‘s largest servers, Asura, Odin, and Bahamut, are at full player capacity. Ergo, Final Fantasy 11 is unlikely to fade away anytime soon.

The Kickstarter campaign Heroes of Midgar: A Tribute to Final Fantasy 7 offers fans a new way to experience the music of the beloved RPG.

Final Fantasy 11 Will Overhaul Its Free Trial

Though the game has since introduced modern features like Final Fantasy 11‘s Character Race Changes, Square Enix just confirmed that Final Fantasy‘s first MMORPG will take a cue from its successor. During the May 15 episode of Freshly Picked Vana’diel, which was summarized and translated on Reddit, Square Enix revealed that the free trial of Final Fantasy 11 would get a big upgrade in the future. Final Fantasy 11‘s free trial will have its current 14-day time limit removed and will have no restrictions on play time. Additionally, the free trial’s level cap will be raised from 50 to 75, allowing players to experience more content in Vana’diel at their own pace.

However, Final Fantasy 11‘s expanded free trial will still have some of its current restrictions in place. One key restriction is that free trial players will only be able to access content from the base version of Final Fantasy 11. Ergo, content from its expansions, such as Chains of Promathia and Wings of the Goddess, will still be inaccessible. The lone exception to this restriction is the Rise of the Zilart expansion, which launched alongside the base version of Final Fantasy 11 for its Western release. While Final Fantasy 11 has taken big steps to make the game more solo-friendly for players, the upgraded free trial will provide curious players a way to experience some of the game’s main draws before committing to a purchase.

Final Fantasy 11 players looking to upgrade from the free trial can pick up the Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition for less than $10 for a limited time. Final Fantasy 11: Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition can be bought from either the Square Enix Store or from Steam. Ergo, players can purchase the game and hold onto the respective game codes once they are ready to upgrade.

Final Fantasy 11’s Free Trial Takes Cues From Its Younger Sibling

Final Fantasy 11‘s upgraded free trial is reminiscent of the one offered by Final Fantasy 14. As of this writing, Final Fantasy 14‘s notoriously generous free trial allows players to reach level 80 and experience most of the game’s content from A Realm Reborn to the Shadowbringers expansion with no playtime restrictions. However, free trial players cannot access some instanced content, including Ultimate Raids and PvP game modes.

Square Enix did not offer a precise timetable for when its free trial would be expanded, so players must wait for more information. Even though Final Fantasy 14‘s free trial has the base game and three expansions’ worth of main story content to experience, Final Fantasy 11‘s upgraded free trial will be valuable in its own right.
