New Final Fantasy Meets Resident Evil Game Launches to Very Positive Reviews

Vultures – Scavengers of Death is a new tactical turn-based survival horror game that’s just launched onto Steam, and it’s already receiving some positive attention from early adopters. Vultures – Scavengers of Death has been developed by Team Vultures and published by Firesquid and Gamersky Games, two companies primarily known for publishing games with a strong focus on strategy.

Steam is currently home to over 6,000 turn-based tactics games, ranging from big AAA modern classics like XCOM and Company of Heroes to small but mighty indie successes like Mewgenics and Limbus Company. What separates Vultures – Scavengers of Death from the crowd, however, is its classic survival horror inspirations, which it wears proudly on its sleeve.

New Party-Based RPG on Steam Basically Simulates the Older Final Fantasy Games

When the Light Dies is aiming straight at old-school RPG fans with a compact adventure, five-character battles, and clear SNES Final Fantasy DNA.

Released on Steam on May 13, Vultures – Scavengers of Death takes place in Salento Valley, a city that’s been devastated by a recent bio-hazard outbreak. Players assume the role of two Vulture agents: Leopoldo, a dutiful operative who relies on strength to control the arena, and Amber, a fiercely intelligent and agile agent who uses a grappling gun to move around environments quickly. An average mission of Vultures will see players choose an agent, head into the ruined city, locate a target, and extract alive using any and every tool at their disposal.

Something that’s immediately obvious from taking just a cursory glance at Vultures‘ in-game screenshots, and something the game’s own Steam page admits freely, is that Vultures – Scavengers of Death is heavily inspired by PS1-era survival horror games, with Resident Evil being specifically mentioned by the developers. Along with a retro PS1-inspired aesthetic, Vultures‘ gameplay loop borrows key elements from survival horror pioneers, such as a limited resource system, monstrous enemy designs, and even environmental puzzles that stand in the way of progress through a level.

But while Vultures – Scavengers of Death‘s overall aesthetic and gameplay loop are predominantly inspired by Resident Evil, its combat mechanics seem to take inspiration from popular tactical turn-based games like Final Fantasy Tactics and XCOM. After scavenging the environment for new weapons, ammo, and consumables, Vultures will often thrust players into battle against a small army of mutant abominations. During these battles, players and enemies take turns to move around the field, interact with objects, and attack one another, with each action and special ability costing a certain number of Action Points.

Vultures – Scavengers of Death Is Already a Hit on Steam

At the time of writing, Vultures – Scavengers of Death holds a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam after 117 user reviews. Obviously, that’s not a huge sample size, and it’s very possible that the game’s user rating could change very quickly. But it’s a good indication that there’s at least something worth playing here. Many of the game’s positive reviews heavily praise Vultures‘ Resident Evil-inspired aesthetic and its attempt to inject some new mechanics into a tried and tested genre. However, a common criticism highlighted in even the most positive reviews is that Vultures can be quite buggy in its current state, with several users reporting severe crashes and game-breaking UI bugs.
