New Game is Basically the Anti-Stardew Valley

New Game is Basically the Anti-Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley may have ushered in a new era of cozy farming sims, but Crop looks like it could start the anti-cozy farming movement. It’s been more than 10 years since ConceredApe’s indie classic first hit the scene, and it’s still going strong, with multiple free updates and a vibrant modding scene keeping the game as popular as ever. Plenty of games have tried to emulate Stardew Valley in the years since, and now a newcomer could bring a unique twist to the formula.

While 1999’s Harvest Moon 64 laid the foundation for the cozy game craze, Stardew Valley has become the genre’s defining modern example. It’s the standard by which all farming sims are measured today and arguably the starting point for the tidal wave of cozy games that have flooded the market over the past several years. Stardew Valley has inspired plenty of great games with varying degrees of similarity to the title, and so it was only a matter of time before developers would try and flip the genre on its head.

ConcernedApe Gives Official Statement on Stardew Valley 2

Stardew Valley creator Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone unveils the surprising truth behind the possibility of a direct sequel to the beloved farming sim.

Crop Looks Like a Lovecraftian Stardew Valley

On April 8, 2026, Carbonara Games unveiled its first-ever game, a creepy farming sim called Crop. The Stardew Valley inspiration is immediately evident, with the player character taking over a farm in an unfamiliar town and tasked with cleaning up the property, tending to crops, and learning more about the townsfolk and the surrounding area. Unlike Stardew, however, it shares elements of the Lovecraftian horror genre that inspired Bloodborne and the Amnesia series, among others. There’s an unsettling fog over many of the scenes, and a growing uneasiness as the player character sees flashes of grotesque imagery, signs of the occult, and even a body in the soil.

Like Stardew Valley, Crop also comes from a small team. According to the title’s Steam page, Carbonara Games consists of just three developers, though Crop also has the support of 11 Bit Studios as a publisher. 11 Bit’s The Alters was one of the best indie games of 2025, and the company has published some hidden gems like Death Howl and Moonlighter, so Crop could be one to watch. Pedigree of the publisher aside, the game’s unique blend of cosmic horror and cozy farming sounds like it could make for quite the experience for Stardew fans looking for something a little darker.

According to the Crop‘s Steam page, players will dig, plant, irrigate, and harvest as they resurrect a broken-down farm and try to learn more about the mysterious village they’ve found themselves in and must now feed. As players progress, they’ll uncover secrets about the town and how they ended up there, and it all sounds very sinister, a far cry from the comfort and friendliness of Stardew Valley. The mash-up of genres is reminiscent of how Dredge combined creepy and cozy in a Lovecraftian fishing sim, and if it’s anything like that title, Carbonara Games could have something special on its hands.

Crop doesn’t have a release date yet, but Carbonara Games says more updates are coming soon. Considering how ConcernedApe’s Haunted Chocolatier may not come out until 2030, it’s possible that Crop beats it to the punch, so it could be something to look forward to while waiting for fans of Stardew Valley. Even apart from Stardew, it looks promising in its own right, so indie horror lovers should keep their eyes peeled for more details.
