New leaks suggest the rumored God of War Metroidvania spin-off may be a multiplatform release. There’s been a lot of movement around the series lately, with the upcoming Amazon show making major casting announcements and rumors swirling about at least two games reportedly in development. Now, there’s reason to believe one of these God of War titles could make its way to consoles other than the PS5.
Neither Sony nor Santa Monica Studio has confirmed any new God of War games, but multiple reports have come out about a couple. It’s been more than three years since the release of Ragnarok, so fans are expecting another mainline entry to get announced before too long. While the Norse storyline may have wrapped up, it’s rumored that the next God of War could be inspired by Egyptian mythology, and there’s word of the series going back to Greece in the form of a 2.5D spin-off, and this game could be notable for more than just its change of genre.
Rumored God of War Game May Feature a Different Protagonist
New report reveals the rumored God of War metroidvania game could feature a new protagonist, moving away from series regular Kratos.
God of War Metroidvania Spin-Off May Get a Multiplatform Release
On February 10, leaker Nash Weedle posted on Twitter that the rumored God of War spin-off could come to Switch 2, and Nate The Hate, another leaker who boasts a near-spotless record, confirmed that he’d heard something similar. The rumors of a 2.5D Metroidvania God of War game have been making their way around the internet since mid-2025, and with so many different sources backing them, the prediction seems fairly believable at this point. However, the potential Switch 2 release is a new development. Nate The Hate didn’t outright confirm this detail, but he did say he’d heard the God of War team had at least considered a multiplatform release, which could lend credence to the notion.
Fit the 9 games into the grid.
Nate The Hate also didn’t specify which platforms this multi-system release could entail, but Nash Weedle’s Switch 2 prediction makes sense. While there have been a few large-scale AAA games to make their way to the hybrid console, its specs are still not quite up to par compared to the PS5 and Series X. In light of that, a 2.5D spin-off could be a good way for Santa Monica Studio to test the waters in bringing God of War to the platform. Of course, an Xbox release could be on the table, too. A PC launch is also possible, as the past two games have come to Steam, but the multiplatform rumors likely revolve around other consoles, which would be a bigger break from series convention.
As for when the rumored spin-off could come out, neither Nash Weedle nor Nate The Hate offered anything, but previous leaks can give fans an idea. When word of the God of War Metroidvania first got out, most sources pointed to a 2025 release window, in line with the franchise’s 20th anniversary. However, an insider soon reported that the God of War spin-off was delayed until 2026, so it may not be a long wait. Obviously, a 2025 launch didn’t happen, but there’s plenty of time left in 2026 for a release, or at least an announcement.
There’s a chance fans could learn if Santa Monica Studio really is planning on a 2.5D Metroidvania as soon as this week. Some say the God of War spin-off could make an appearance at the upcoming State of Play on February 12. If the game is targeting a 2026 release, it would make sense to announce it soon. As always with leaks and rumors, though, only time will tell for sure.
