A new look at Halo: Campaign Evolved indicates that Sony’s PlayStation provides a better experience than playing on Xbox. While it’s good news for PlayStation gamers who are trying out the series by way of Halo: Campaign Evolved for the first time, Xbox users may not be thrilled.
Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original game, marks the first time that Halo has come to PlayStation consoles in its 25 year history. Though some players would have preferred to have seen the Master Chief Collection go to PS5 first, it’s nonetheless an exciting release for gamers who have stuck with the PlayStation ecosystem over the years and have never experienced Halo as a result.

Now, a look at the game by Digital Foundry has uncovered some interesting performance details, and it looks like PS5 gamers have an edge. The game performs well on both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 overall, with both families of consoles having a choice between Quality Mode and Performance Mode with very few differences between how the two systems handle the game. However, standard PlayStation 5 consoles seem to have a slight advantage, as Digital Foundry noticed there were some stuttering issues in cutscenes that were only present on the Xbox version. The real winner is the PS5 Pro, though, with the system’s PSSR2 upscaling capabilities providing a solid experience both visually and in terms of performance. PS5 Pro’s Performance Mode looked just about as good as Quality Mode on the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X, but maintained 60 FPS the vast majority of the time, even when gameplay got frantic.

While PlayStation 5 Pro owners are likely happy, and PS5 users have a slight advantage, there’s still reasons for gamers to be frustrated on both sides. PlayStation gamers who enjoy Halo: Campaign Evolved may be left wondering if they’ll be able to play any of the other games without resorting to using an Xbox or PC. Back in 2025, Xbox revealed plans to make Halo as a whole a multiplatform game franchise, but a lot has happened over at Xbox since, particularly with regard to console exclusives. Xbox has made a lot of changes in recent history, with one of its big focuses now being a return to Xbox exclusives in an effort to make owning an Xbox console a more appealing and inviting experience. Xbox hasn’t officially rescinded its Halo plan, but Sony gamers may nonetheless be concerned.
On the other hand, Xbox gamers won’t have to worry about future Halo releases being on Xbox consoles, as the line of Microsoft systems has always been Halo‘s home. However, that may make the PlayStation’s apparent advantages over Xbox in Halo: Campaign Evolved all the more frustrating. The PS5 Pro is a more recent console than Xbox Series X, so having some perks over the competitor is reasonable, but the cutscene advantage on base PS5s may be frustrating for Microsoft gamers.
Gamers on both Xbox and PlayStation may have an overall good time with the game, as Halo: Campaign Evolved has received largely positive reviews from critics. User reviews have been harsher, with some expressing frustration over the remake’s lack of evolution, while others have wondered about who remakes of games like Halo: Campaign Evolved are even for. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Halo franchise as the next generation of consoles arrive.
