New Horizons Gets New 3.0.2 Update and a Free Goodie for April 2026

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has received a new 3.0.2 update, and alongside it, a special free goodie for players to enjoy. The Animal Crossing: New Horizons freebie arrives in honor of the series’ 25th anniversary.

Animal Crossing got its start in Japan way back in 2001, though gamers outside of Japan wouldn’t begin meeting the franchise until 2002. Animal Crossing has had a strong fandom and playerbase since its inception in Japan, though it’s taken a bit longer to gain a major foothold in the west. Its time as a cult classic arguably ended with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, when, for a time, it seemed like the whole world was playing the game as gamers and non-gamers alike found themselves stuck at home due to COVID restrictions. After the release of the Switch 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons got new changes, and now it’s received another update.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch 2 Upgrade – Is It Worth It?

The big new Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 update is here alongside a Switch 2 version, but fans may be wondering if it’s worth the price.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons players on both the original Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2 can now download the game’s 3.0.2 update. The game has undergone a number of fixes to bugs, including issues impacting game mechanics like crafting and Slumber Islands. Players will no longer have to deal with getting stuck in hotel rooms due to furniture or the behavior of their guests, nor will villagers spontaneously appear in odd locations in a home. Minor visual bugs like dung beetles on snowballs still being there after the snowball is destroyed and items appearing from rocks before they’re actually struck have also been fixed.

However, there is also at least one bug that players may have been using to their advantage that’s also been amended. A bug where players could craft multiple items requiring six types of materials without using all the necessary materials has been amended, so players will have to stick to the original DIY recipes. While not much detail was provided, additional adjustments and corrections have been made to “improve the game play experience.”

Players who download the update can get a new item right now; a giant decorative leaf based upon the Animal Crossing logo. If the update doesn’t download automatically, players can simply access the game menu from the Switch and Switch 2’s home screen and tell it to search for a new update and install it. Once the update is downloaded, players simply need to access their in-game mailbox to pick up the new item, which can be used as a decorative piece outdoors.

With Animal Crossing: New Horizons now being six years old, it will be interesting to see how the game is supported moving forward. Rather than immediately releasing a new Animal Crossing game, Nintendo surprised fans by releasing new content and significant improvements with its 3.0 update after the Nintendo Switch 2 came out. Committed fans are still deeply invested in their New Horizons islands, with many hoping that Nintendo will release DLC or other major updates rather than moving on to a new game anytime soon. As there was no new Animal Crossing game in the recent Nintendo leak, that may turn out to be the case.

Latest update: Ver. 3.0.2 (Released April 13, 2026)

The following updates have been made when playing the game on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch:

General updates

  • A commemorative item for the 25th anniversary of theAnimal Crossingseries has been added. Please check the in-game mailbox to receive it.
  • Fixed an issue in hotel guest rooms where furniture placement or guest behavior could prevent exiting the room.
  • Fixed an issue where crafting multiple items at once using a DIY recipe requiring six types of materials could sometimes be completed even without sufficient materials.
  • Fixed an issue where a dung beetle appearing on a snowball could remain on-screen after the snowball disappeared.
  • Fixed an issue where items could pop out of a rock before the shovel made contact when hitting it.

    • This issue was addressed in Ver. 3.0.1, but could still occur under certain conditions, so it has been fixed again.
  • Fixed an issue where bringing custom designs created by the player to a Slumber Island could prevent them from being displayed at Able Sisters or uploaded to the Custom Design Portal.
  • Fixed an issue where glowing spots on the island would not appear lit when viewing the island from the plane while returning from another island.
  • Fixed an issue where villagers who had promised to visit the player’s home could sometimes appear in unnatural locations inside the house.
  • Other adjustments and corrections were made to improve the game play experience.

Changes to DLC

The following issues related to the paid DLC “Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise” have been fixed.

  • Fixed an issue where animals requesting vacation homes would stop appearing on the beach even when some animals still do not have vacation homes.
