New Horror Game on Steam Puts a Psychological Twist on Sound Design

Fans of psychological thrillers with unexpected twists can look forward to a new audio-based horror game with Imprinted, a unique experience where players take on the role of a forensic specialist who has been tasked with restoring distressing sound recordings tied to the occult. Set to launch exclusively for PC via Steam in 2026, Imprinted turns video game sound design on its head with a demand for “mental clarity” and immersive simulation that places players at the center of an unsettling story unearthed through haunting audio.

Developed by Cobalt Lane, a European indie studio comprised of veteran game developers, and featuring an original soundtrack created by award-winning composer Filippo Beck Peccoz and ambient, post-folk musician Charlotte Oleena, Imprinted aims to push horror in a new direction. A number of newer indie horror games on Steam have helped to diversify and expand the genre, often with unique gameplay features and unexpected methods of storytelling. Hits like Home Safety Hotline have resurrected the nostalgia of analog gaming while also creating realistic worlds for players to settle into. Looking to join the ranks of games that redefine the horror genre while also bringing back familiar gameplay, Imprinted blends retro video game mechanics with the beloved “found footage” visual presentation style, making for a refreshing new journey into the realm of psychological horror.

New Steam Horror Game is Like Silent Hill, But Set in a Creepy Carnival

This survival horror game on Steam has serious Silent Hill vibes mixed with a creepy carnival setting that is perfect for retro horror fans.

Imprinted Horror Game Turns Sound Design into a Psychological Thriller

Vincent Brandt is an engineer specializing in the restoration of damaged cassette tapes and other forms of audio recording and finds himself applying for a job asking for help to sort through forensic evidence connected to the experimental musician Viola Fossati. In the 1970s, Viola was known as a mysterious artist with ties to the occult, and she disappeared under suspicious circumstances, prompting a probe into lost recordings containing fragments of her life up until her demise. As Vincent, players will need to exhume Viola’s body of work, unwittingly “drifting into a spiral of creative obsession” and falling into a rabbit hole riddled with conspiracies, obscurities, and the otherworldly. Blending old-school analog gameplay with a story told through sound, Imprinted will test players’ detective skills and psychological fortitude in the search for what really happened to Viola Fossati.

Imprinted features its very own “fake OS” that allows players to fully boot-up an in-game PC and utilize dozens of functioning programs. This ArdesiaOS, touted as “The Operating System for the Ages,” includes audio and video media players, an Oneiric browser, and even a realistic terminal. Players will also be able to chat with and email Vincent’s friends and colleagues, shaping various relationships while rummaging through old files and learning as much about the playable character as they do the enigmatic Viola. Additionally, Imprinted lets players determine the outcome of Vincent’s own artistic process by having them dig into his unconscious mind and uncover a darker side to his artistic process that has been influenced by the truth about Viola Fossati. Players will be able to record their own versions of Vincent’s music and lyrics, further evolving the immersive sound design and audio gameplay.

From whispers in the static to questionably warped recordings, the horror of Imprinted offers a slow-burning gradual spiral through atmospheric storytelling, audio-driven gameplay, and a deep dive into the way the human experience becomes imprinted into everything, including sound. What starts off as a simple task to push through the restoration of old audio tapes quickly becomes a much more perplexing experience once something inside the recordings starts pushing back. Players who enjoy rich psychological narratives told through artifacts, logs, recordings, and immersive simulations can now wishlist Imprinted on Steam and can follow along for more updates on new horror games coming in 2026.
