Great news, Baldur’s Gate 3 fans: beloved tiefling Karlach is officially returning in a brand-new comic book from Dark Horse. The popular companion has long been held up as one of the strongest elements of Baldur’s Gate 3, and now, she’s back, with a comic book expanding on her story.
Upon Baldur’s Gate 3‘s release in August 2023, its companions were instantly praised as a high point. Larian’s RPG weaved a colorful cast of characters together perfectly, each with their own individual narratives that developed alongside the main plot – as long as players engaged with it, of course. Everyone has their own favorite Baldur’s Gate 3 companion, but Karlach was one that attracted tons of attention right from release.
Karlach Returns in New Baldur’s Gate 3 Comic Book
Dark Horse has officially confirmed that a new comic series based on Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Karlach is on the way, which will expand on the tiefling barbarian’s story. It will feature artwork by comic book illustrator Becky Cloonan, and the first look captures her likeness perfectly. Unfortunately, no date has been given by Dark Horse for when fans can expect the new Baldur’s Gate 3 Karlach comic series, but implored fans to “stay tuned for more details.”
Who’s That Character?

Identify the silhouettes before time runs out.
Perhaps most interesting here is that the announcement confirms the comic series is being created alongside Larian Studios. It’s no secret that Larian moved away from Baldur’s Gate 3 quickly after its launch, with no post-launch DLC and distanced itself from the possibility of making a sequel. So to see the developer involved in the creation of this comic is surprising, even if there’s no indication of how much creative control it will have over the project.
Karlach’s return is sure to be a hit with fans. There’s still a lot to unravel about her story, so the potential is there for this comic series to improve the character even further than everything seen throughout the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. The interesting thing about projects like this is that they can often recontextualize events in the game, adding new levels of depth and replayability to the original experience. Whether this will happen with Karlach remains to be seen, but it’s an exciting possibility.
While Karlach is coming back in comic book form, it remains to be seen whether she will pop up in future video games. Given the fact that some developers have already said no to making Baldur’s Gate 4, getting the project off the ground in the first place may prove problematic for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast. And even then, it’s possible that any future game could look to avoid the main cast of Baldur’s Gate 3. As popular as they are, their presence instantly raises huge expectations, which any Baldur’s Gate sequel does not need.
