Since the release of Baldur’s Gate 3 in August 2023, fans have been waiting for a new release from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro to fill the void. And while there isn’t a new Baldur’s Gate game coming out any time soon, there is a new release arriving on July 21 for fans to add to their collection.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the biggest critical and commercial successes of the decade so far. Larian’s epic CRPG won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023, emerging out of a nearly three-year early access period to enormous acclaim. While Larian was no stranger to fans of the CRPG genre thanks to the Divinity series, its latest title catapulted the studio to more mainstream success.
Baldur’s Gate 3: The Necromancy of Thay Releases July 21
Coming via Penguin Random House, Baldur’s Gate 3: The Necromancy of Thay is a new hardcover grid-paper notebook designed for “journaling, sketching, adventuring, and more,” making it extremely useful for any Dungeon Master looking to brainstorm their next Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The book’s design is based on its appearance as an item in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s main questline, and players will instantly be able to recognize its unique design.

Baldur’s Gate 3: The Necromancy of Thay is planned to be released on July 21, 2026, with a $25 price tag. It features 272 pages in total – plenty of room for planning a D&D campaign. Hilariously, Penguin Random House does note that the notebook does not grant the ability to cast the “Speak with Dead” spell, unlike its in-game counterpart. It may not fill the void of a new game in the series, but it’s still a fun one for fans and collectors to pick up for their Baldur’s Gate fix.

Sadly, it will likely be a very long time before there is a new game in the Baldur’s Gate series. Just recently, one of the lead designers for the first two games revealed that they turned down the opportunity to make Baldur’s Gate 4 after Larian announced it wouldn’t be returning. By his own admission, the expectations set for Larian are so difficult for others to live up to, meaning that any studio that does take it on is fighting against the odds from day one.
As for Larian, its next steps are already clear. At The Game Awards 2025, the developer officially revealed Divinity, returning to its own original IP for the first time since Divinity: Original Sin 2 in 2017. The studio has promised that the game is going to be even bigger than Baldur’s Gate 3 in terms of its scale, which is a big claim. Whether it can live up to the expectations remains to be seen.
