New Official Game Boy Color Game Launches to Strong 4.8/5 Reviews

Retro gamers have a brand-new Game Boy Color game to play, arriving almost 28 years after the handheld console first launched. Complete with a physical cartridge, this new Game Boy Color game has already received great 4.8/5 reviews from players.

Originally released in 1998, the Game Boy Color is perhaps showing its age nowadays. But once upon a time, there were some incredible Game Boy Color games like Pokemon Crystal, Dragon Warrior 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, all of which stand the test of time. To play GBC games in 2026, most players rely on emulation, but there’s undoubtedly something charming about picking up an actual handheld and playing the good old-fashioned way.

New Game Boy Clone Just Proved Retro Gaming Doesn’t Have to Choose Between Cartridges and Emulation

FunnyPlaying’s latest handheld product solves a major issue that many come in contact with when they want to play retro titles.

The latest Game Boy Color game is Pineapple Kid DX from developer MHZ Games, which is available to purchase in a physical cartridge via ModRetro. The puzzle game is a brand-new GBC version of the original Pineapple Kid, which launched for the Game Boy in 2021. This upgraded version features new vibrant colors and includes new modes as well as a built-in achievement system.

Embark on a vibrant puzzle adventure as Pineapple Kid! Navigate tricky levels, outsmart enemies, and collect keys to unlock your path to victory in this challenging, replayable quest.

Developer MHZ Games says that key inspirations for Pineapple Kid DX include games like Kwirk and Amazing Tater, specifically their simplicity and clever level design. The game itself is a puzzler where players “navigate tricky levels, outsmart enemies, and collect keys” to unlock the solutions in what is described as a “challenging, replayable quest.” It even includes its own level builder, letting players design and test custom levels on the cartridge.

Pineapple Kid DX Key Features

  • Challenging puzzler gameplay
  • Replayable levels
  • Custom level creator
  • Physical cartridge release, compatible with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Super Game Boy, and Chromatic
  • Instruction manual included
  • Built-in achievement system

It’s still early days, as Pineapple Kid DX is a new release. However, reviews for the game so far are excellent among players. On ModRetro, the game has a 4.8/5 rating so far, indicating that retro fans are very happy with the fun puzzler. The developer says it’s compatible with the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Super Game Boy, and the Chromatic, meaning anyone who owns any of these physical devices can jump in and play.

Retro gaming is alive and well, and even when official support for these classic platforms ends, the community keeps it alive in their own way. In fact, Pineapple Kid DX isn’t the only new Game Boy Color game to be released this month, following the launch of Fall From Space, also on ModRetro. It’s awesome not just that developers are passionate enough to keep making these kinds of games, but also that the community is big enough to make them viable.
