Marvel’s Wolverine has just been given an official age rating by the ESRB. The ESRB has officially branded Marvel’s Wolverine ‘M for Mature’, citing blood and gore, drug references, intense violence, partial nudity, and strong language as reasons for the rating.
The long and rocky road from announcement to launch is finally almost at an end for Marvel’s Wolverine. Teased all the way back in the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Marvel’s Wolverine disappeared from the public eye for years, appearing only unintentionally as part of the major ransomware attack that hit Insomniac Games in December 2023. Marvel’s Wolverine eventually resurfaced in September 2025, four years after its initial reveal, where it was given a late 2026 release window. That window was then narrowed down a few months later, with the February 2026 State of Play revealing a September 15, 2026 release date for Marvel’s Wolverine, which is now just six weeks away.
Marvel’s Wolverine Receives Official ESRB Rating
As is standard practice with high-profile releases like this one, the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) has just given Marvel’s Wolverine an official age rating well in advance of its upcoming launch in September. The ESRB has given Marvel’s Wolverine an ‘M for Mature’ rating, indicating that the game is only suitable for those above the age of 17. This rating has been given due to intense violence, blood and gore, drug references, partial nudity, and strong language. In-game purchases are also listed as a reason for the age rating, though the nature of them is unspecified.

The ESRB has provided a lengthy summary to accompany Wolverine‘s new US age rating, which sheds new light on just how adult-oriented this long-awaited Marvel video game will be. Some light story details are teased in the ESRB listing, though it’s nothing Insomniac hasn’t confirmed already, with it simply stating that players will assume the role of Wolverine as he “reunites with Team X to stop a dangerous threat.” In Insomniac’s Marvel universe, the X-Men don’t exist yet, but the small Mutant strike force Team X does.

The vast majority of ESRB’s Wolverine content description is dedicated to detailing the game’s violence and gore. ESRB states that “frequent blood-splatter effects, screams of pain, and dismemberment/decapitation” feature throughout Marvel’s Wolverine, along with graphic slow-motion finishers, cutscenes that depict blood and gore, and in-game environments that are “strewn with torsos and limbs.”
On top of these violent and gory images, Marvel’s Wolverine is said to feature some dialogue that references drugs such as fentanyl, along with some strong language. Some partial nudity is also on display in Marvel’s Wolverine, with ESRB citing a “handful of sequences [that] briefly depict a character’s exposed buttocks.”
While many of these mature elements have already appeared in Marvel’s Wolverine‘s State of Play gameplay reveal trailer and the more recent cinematic trailer, this ESRB listing really hammers home just how adult-oriented the entire experience will be, especially when compared to previous Insomniac Marvel games. For reference, all of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games have received ‘T for Teen’ ratings from the ESRB.
