An eight-player open-world action RPG with Souls-lite combat called Dimraeth entered Steam early access on September 15 and has since earned a solid 80% positive rating from more than 2,000 players. It also reached an impressive concurrent player count of around 11,000 at one point. Dimraeth has attracted both Soulslike and cozy base-building fans on Steam by combining elements of the two subgenres.

Some have dubbed Dimraeth the love child of Elden Ring and Stardew Valley, a comparison rooted in the game’s Souls-inspired combat mechanics and pixel art style. Elden Ring and Stardew Valley might not sound like natural ingredients for a single game, but Dimraeth‘s success suggests otherwise.

Dimraeth’s Souls-lite Combat Gets Fans’ Approval

In Dimraeth, players take on the role of mighty heroes who set out to fight beasts and mythical creatures across an open-world map, a gameplay loop loosely reminiscent of Elden Ring. Interestingly, one of the features that has received the most praise from fans is the Souls-lite combat, which some players describe as “fun and fluid.” That is remarkable in itself for an indie game with Soulslike elements, as the subgenre is highly saturated and games that embrace the label can face harsh criticism.

Combat hasn’t been Dimraeth‘s sole strong suit. Many believe that the contrast between building a base in a cozy atmosphere after intense battles gives Dimraeth a unique feel, something that’s not easy to find among other open-world RPGs on Steam. Additionally, the game’s graphics have been praised by players, with some noting that its level of visual polish is impressive for an early-access title.

Dimraeth Took the Biggest Hit for Its Writing

Getting 80% positive reviews in competitive Steam categories like open-world and Soulslike is a massive achievement for developer Mudtek. However, Dimraeth‘s launch hasn’t been free of controversy. Many of the game’s current negative reviews on Steam point to its weak or lackluster dialogue. A few players have also raised concerns about possible AI involvement in the game’s character interactions, and Mudtek’s alleged response to the criticism on Discord has seemingly given these theories more weight.

Fans should note that Dimraeth is still in early access, and many of its problems, including its less-popular writing, could be overhauled before the 1.0 release. So far, the game has shown the potential to become one of Steam’s popular indie RPGs and perhaps one of the rare releases capable of satisfying both Soulslike lovers and cozy life sim fans. In the coming days, it will be interesting to see how Dimraeth keeps its player base engaged and what updates it has in store for the rest of the year.

Dimraeth is currently available on PC via Steam, and the development team has no plans to bring it to consoles or other PC platforms in the near future. For now, the team’s focus is on polishing the Steam release before it reaches version 1.0.
