Overwatch fans will finally be getting their hands on another member of MEKA Squad come August 11, and a new hero trailer just dropped to highlight her story before her debut. However, though D.Mon is the main character of this Overwatch animation, it’s Wrecking Ball that really steals the show.
One of the post-launch additions to the original Overwatch, Wrecking Ball — AKA Hammond — is one of the hyper-intelligent creatures created on the Horizon Lunar Colony. Though he lacks Winston’s ability to speak, he’s a brilliant engineer with a chaotic edge, something that his mech makes clear whenever it translates for the rodent. Hammond left Horizon Lunar Colony amidst an animal uprising, crash-landing in Australia before transforming his escape pod into a mech. He quickly rose the ranks within Junker Queen’s arena using this mech, but lore-wise, his story tapered off there — that is, until now.
Overwatch’s D.Mon Trailer Makes Wrecking Ball the Enemy
In Overwatch’s new D.Mon trailer, the Junkers attack Busan due to their new partnership with Vendetta and Talon. Junker Queen gives Wrecking Ball the mission of being a violent distraction, gunning down civilians on a bridge while attempting to cause its collapse. He eagerly embraces this chaos, committing literal war crimes to draw Meka Squad’s attention so that Vendetta can steal an EMP from their base. This forces D.Mon to choose between following orders and returning to base or stopping Wrecking Ball to save civilians. She chooses the latter, displaying her values clearly ahead of her in-game debut.
Vendetta successfully escapes with the EMP, which is both clear setup for the next step of her plan and a future problem for the people of Busan to deal with, as Meka Squad just lost their defense against the mysterious Gwishin. Still, D.Mon considers this the better outcome, as she plans to interrogate the defeated Wrecking Ball for information on the Junkers. After punishing the Junkers for their crimes, she vows that MEKA Squad will turn its attention to Talon and the EMP. Ultimately, this trailer does plenty to further the Reign of Talon arc while establishing that D.Mon is much less playful than D.Va. It also teases some of her in-game abilities, like a shield and sword.

Still, while the early look at D.Mon is exciting, it’s Wrecking Ball that has really gotten fans talking. This is partially because of how villainous his actions are in the trailer, as it’s hard not to laugh at a hamster causing so much damage. He gets tons of standout moments, too, from muting Junker Queen to raging after being defeated, and his feeding, distraction techniques, and flank routes mirror Wrecking Ball gameplay tropes in hilarious fashion. Plus, for the first time in years, Hammond’s lore has actually progressed. He’s clearly a loyal Junker, but whether Junker Queen rewards that loyalty and tries to rescue him is unclear. Additionally, Winston will surely hear about Hammond’s actions, opening the door to a big reunion.
There’s even a possibility — albeit unlikely, given the seriousness of his crimes — that Wrecking Ball is rehabilitated and recruited into MEKA Squad. Clearly, it’s an exciting time to be a Tank main in Overwatch, as not only is a new hero joining the role, but older ones like Hammond are getting some much-needed attention.
