New Party-Based Tactical RPG on Steam is a Simpler Baldur’s Gate 3…With Dinosaurs

Gamers can spend hours browsing on Steam to find the perfect game. There’s just so much to choose from, that it can be as daunting as trying to sift through a bunch of movie and TV recommendations on Netflix or Hulu. The number of games on Steam is staggering, but there are some with such wild premises that they immediately stand out from the crowd. In this day and age, that’s really hard to do, but Scourge of the Reptiles definitely might pique the interest of some gamers.

Scourge of the Reptiles looks like a throwback to classic RPGs, but there is more to the game. It isn’t just a run-of-the-mill party-based RPG. There are also dinosaurs. Scourge of the Reptiles takes plenty of inspiration from fantasy games like Baldur’s Gate 3, but adding dinosaurs into the mix also gives it a little bit of an Ark: Survival Evolved edge. It’s a combination that’s so bizarre it just might work, making it an RPG that both fantasy lovers and dino fans will want to keep on their radar.

8 Indie Games That Are Best Played On A Steam Deck

These great indie games are best played on the portable Steam Deck.

Scourge of the Reptiles Shows What Would Happen if Dinosaurs Were Added to Baldur’s Gate 3

There have been several games that bring dinosaurs front and center, but they still haven’t been used to their full extent. Scourge of the Reptiles could be great for gamers who have been craving more dinosaur-based titles. Games like Dino Crisis, the Ark series, and Jurassic Park spin-offs are some of the most notable, but there is so much more potential for dinosaurs in gaming. Throwing prehistoric monsters into a fantasy setting is a fun outside-the-box concept, and players who are interested in Scourge of the Reptiles can expect some fun features from this new Steam indie game.

  • Turn-based tactical combat
  • Dynamic environments for battles
  • Magic and skill-based gameplay

  • 35-hour campaign

In Scourge of the Reptiles, Dinosaurs Can Be Friend or Foe

The game takes place in the low-fantasy world of Odion, a place where dinosaurs once roamed the area freely and peacefully. However, that has recently changed. A mysterious force has been corrupting many of the dinosaurs and turning them hostile. Odion is filled with plenty of dangers already, but the added threat of dinosaurs has made life even more harrowing. Scourge of the Reptiles‘ mysterious dark force that corrupts living things is a common trope in some of the best fantasy games, but this may be the first time that the concept has been used on dinosaurs.

There are 19 dinosaur species, with some of the confirmed ones being well-known classics like the T-Rex, pterodactyls, and raptors. Although Scourge of the Reptiles features plenty of dangerous run-ins with dinosaurs, there is also good news. They can be tamed. Dinosaurs can either be fear-inducing enemies, or they can be added to the party as useful mounts. Each dino will have specific skills, making them really useful in certain situations. A party-based RPG with dinosaur companions is a really creative way to shake up this specific genre.

Dinosaurs Are a Big Deal in Scourge of the Reptiles, But They Aren’t the Only Main Feature

Beyond the dinosaur concept, Scourge of the Reptiles is ultimately a fantasy RPG at heart. A lot of Baldur’s Gate 3 fans may not be as interested in the whole dinosaur thing, but the game focuses even more on party-based combat that requires tactical thinking. Scourge of the Reptiles‘ gameplay is also really flexible, as it features over 100 skills and abilities for players to utilize to customize their characters. It may not have customizable features like the Baldur’s Gate 3 character creator, but the number of skills available still offers a lot of freedom for building a unique party.

Scourge of the Reptiles might also be a great choice for gamers who are in search of a new game where adapting to each new encounter is essential for success. The game is promising an experience where every encounter feels different, which means that players will have to think fast in order to adapt their party to the situation at hand. There is a really heavy emphasis on tactical thinking, which was one of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s best features, so Scourge of the Reptiles is bound to resonate with fans when it comes to this.

Scourge of the Reptiles‘ environments bring an extra level of challenge by utilizing terrain as a way to gain the upper hand in battle. The best tactical RPGs really lean into environmental diversity to enhance gameplay. Whether it’s having the high ground or finding a good opening to flank enemies, environmental factors are incredibly important.

Scourge of the Reptiles is a Reminder of How Underused Dinosaurs Are in Video Games

It’s not like dinosaurs have to be in everything, but Scourge of the Reptiles is a fun example of how these prehistoric creatures can be fascinating additions to established genres. This is what makes Steam such a great place for indie games. Indie developers have a platform to showcase their wild ideas to the world. Last year alone was packed with great indies. Some of the best indie releases of last year included games like Blue Prince, R.E.P.O., PEAK, and Skate Story, and it’s going to be interesting to see how Scourge of the Reptiles stacks up against the growing list of 2026 indies that are quickly piling up.

The year is already almost halfway over, and Scourge of the Reptiles is one of many compelling indie games on the way. This dinosaur-filled fantasy RPG doesn’t have an official release date set in stone yet, but the game’s official Steam page claims that developer Kyoti Games is aiming to launch it sometime during Q3 this year. Only time will tell how Scourge of the Reptiles feels to play when it’s released, but it hopefully has what it takes to bring another great dinosaur game into the spotlight.
