A Pokemon fan created a new ROM hack called Pokemon FireEmerald, which grants players a way to explore both the Hoenn and Kanto regions as one combined Gen 3 adventure. As Pokemon fans wait for new information about Pokemon Winds and Waves, the new Pokemon FireEmerald ROM hack project should offer interested trainers a welcome diversion.
Throughout the years, Pokemon fans have shared various projects and games to give trainers unique ways to play through their favorite Pokemon game generations. For example, a recent fan-made project dubbed Pokemon Odyssey 2 combines elements from Pokemon‘s different generations with Atlus’ Etrian Odyssey franchise to offer over 300 regional Pokemon variants. A demo of Pokemon Odyssey 2, which is said to offer 10 to 20 hours of gameplay, is now available for trainers to peruse.
New Pokemon FireEmerald ROM Hack Combines Kanto and Hoenn Into One Grand Tale
On July 19, a Pokemon fan named ManicPacer unveiled Pokemon FireEmerald, a Gen 3 adventure that allows players to explore the Hoenn and Kanto regions in their entirety. However, ManicPacer established that Pokemon FireEmerald is not an open-world hack, as access to the Hoenn region would only be available after trainers became the Kanto Pokemon League Champion. Pokemon FireEmerald also includes access to the Sevii Islands from Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, which players can explore at their leisure. Pokemon FireEmerald also includes some quality-of-life features from the PokeEmerald Expansion project, such as optional day and night cycles, updated Pokemon battle mechanics and types. Like most Pokemon ROM hacks that offer a robust Pokedex, Pokemon FireEmerald uses a ROM of Pokemon Emerald as the main base.
Pokemon FireEmerald Key Features

- No missing version-exclusive Pokemon
- Event tickets are organically incorporated into the setting. Certain NPCs give them instead of duplicate key items that the player may have already obtained in the opposing region. One of them is unavoidable by following the main story; the rest are optional/missable.
- Mega Stones and Linking Cords become available at a certain shop at a certain point in the game.
- Cerulean Cave is accessible immediately after becoming Champion and no longer gated behind the Sevii Islands quest. However, Mewtwo is now level 60 instead of 70 if encountered before Hoenn, and 100 after.
- The game boots into either the FireRed or Emerald intro and title screen depending on which region the player last saved in.
As of this writing, the only official Pokemon releases to offer two full regions in one game cartridge were the fan-favorite Pokemon Gold and Silver, Pokemon Crystal, and Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver. However, Pokemon FireEmerald comes with some caveats for trainers to consider before booting up the game. After becoming the Champion of Kanto, traveling to Hoenn will prevent trainers from returning to Kanto until the Hoenn region’s main story is complete. Pokemon levels in Hoenn will also be boosted to much higher degrees, so trainers must come prepared beforehand. ManicPacer cautioned that Pokemon FireEmerald is an incomplete experience that may have some bugs lingering around due to it being a solo project.
However, Pokemon FireEmerald has a few features planned out in later updates. Along with some user interface customization, Pokemon FireEmerald will include some advanced difficulty settings and a built-in Nuzlocke challenge mode for players to use. Given the popularity of the Nuzlocke challenge across Pokemon’s vast fan base, it remains to be seen how many Pokemon FireEmerald trainers will undergo a Nuzlocke challenge run.
