New Pokemon Release Takes You Back to the Hoenn Region

New Pokemon Release Takes You Back to the Hoenn Region

Pokemon fans can revisit the Hoenn Region in a way they’ve never been able to before. While the Gen 3 Pokemon region has been remade on the 3DS with Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, a new remake of the games puts a different spin on Hoenn.

As Pokemon has evolved from the 2D, sprite-based era of the first five generations into the modern 3D era, it’s understandably had some growing pains. Pokemon Sword and Shield, and most recently Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, have drawn criticism for their underwhelming graphics, prompting many fans to yearn for the classic sprites of the older gens. These fans have gotten their wish, at least for the Gen 3 Pokemon games, with a new release that blends the classic with the modern.

Next Year Will Officially Be the End of an Era for Pokemon Fans

A major era is ending for the Pokemon franchise, and fans have a short time left before major changes come to the video games.

Pokemon Gamma Emerald Remakes the Hoenn Region in Unreal Engine 5

Pokemon Gamma Emerald is a new fan-made project that reimagines the Gen 3 games in an HD-2D art style and is built in Unreal Engine 5. Developed by UndreamedPanic, Gamma Emerald is currently available in early access, allowing players to experience the first third of Pokemon Emerald, from Littleroot Town up through Mauville City. Not only is this remake an upgrade in graphics to the HD-2D art style, but Gamma Emerald also features major quality-of-life improvements, such as:

  • Lead Pokemon can follow you around outside its ball
  • A Day/Night system with encounters changing based on the time of day
  • HMs are now automatic and no longer need to be taught to a Pokemon
  • Physical/Special Split in battles, Gen 6 formula and rules
  • Peer-to-Peer trading

The visual style of Pokemon Gamma Emerald takes after games like Octopath Traveler and the Dragon Quest HD-2D Remake games, which are also developed using Unreal Engine. However, the soul of the Gen 3 pixel art on the Game Boy Advance remains intact with this remake.

Pokemon Gamma Emerald can be downloaded for free on Game Jolt.

Features like Gen 6 battle mechanics and a day/night system go a long way to improve upon the original Pokemon Emerald, making Gamma Emerald closer to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in all but art style. This fan-made remake comes hot off the heels of another Pokemon fan project, the Pokemon Gen1Recomp, which similarly translates the Kanto Region into an HD-2D game using the original games’ sprites. There is even a VR mod for the Gen1Recomp that lets players experience the Kanto Region from a first-person perspective.

While fans can play Pokemon Gamma Emerald in early access right now, they may also get to experience the original Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald games again very soon. Official Nintendo Switch releases of these Gen 3 Pokemon games have been leaked for release later this Fall, following in the footsteps of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, which were released as standalone games on the Switch back in February. These Switch ports haven’t officially been confirmed yet, so fans itching to jump back into the Hoenn Region still have a great reason to check out Gamma Emerald in the meantime.
