New PS Plus Premium PSP Game Comes With a Catch

New PS Plus Premium PSP Game Comes With a Catch

A new arrival on PlayStation Plus‘ Premium tier, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, has launched without the inclusion of PlayStation trophies, leaving some achievement-hunting players feeling left in the dust. The addition of the classic fighting game to PlayStation Plus is sure to delight fans of classic Tekken games, but they’ll have to celebrate their victories without having their achievements digitally recorded through trophies.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection was first released in arcades around the world between late 2005 and early 2006 before making its way to the PlayStation Portable in the summer of 2006. It’s largely the same game as the original Tekken 5, which came out for the PlayStation 2 in 2004, following the same general story and featuring similar quick, fluid fighting-game gameplay that the series is known for. However, it includes some notable differences and upgrades, including the addition of three more fighters from the Tekken series roster, a dozen more ranking titles in Arcade Battle mode, improvements to statistics tracking, and a rebalancing of characters.

Tekken Director Announces Surprise Departure from Bandai Namco

It’s the end of an era for the Tekken franchise as longtime director Katsuhiro Harada announces his departure with a unique social media post.

The arrival of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, available for PS4 and PS5 on the Premium tier of the PlayStation Plus subscription service, now brings this classic fighting game to a new generation of players nearly 20 years after its PSP debut. However, some fans are bound to be disappointed by its complete lack of trophies. Typically, every PlayStation 5 game records trophies through a four-tier system between Bronze and Platinum, giving players recognition for their gaming achievements across a broad range of challenges. The practice of requiring all new games on PlayStation consoles to support trophies has been around since the days of the PlayStation 3, and while they are still used in practice for all new games on PlayStation 5, those rules don’t always apply to older titles that have been ported in for use on newer hardware, as is the case with the latest classic Tekken port.

Fans of playing classic games on PS4 and PS5 may have noticed this trend in the past, as Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is not the first game featured on PlayStation Plus to not record player achievements via trophies. Past titles that have been added to PS Plus Premium without trophies being enabled include the PSP version of Tekken 6, SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, and select games from the Armored Core and Ridge Racer series.

Astute fans may recognize that most of the titles on that list were either developed or published by Bandai Namco, as is the case with Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which was co-developed by Eighting. As a part of its publisher policy, classic games from Bandai Namco that are released on modern PlayStation consoles do not typically include trophies, and while Sony has held a pretty hard line requiring publishers to add trophy support to all new games, it has relaxed these rules to allow players to enjoy older games that did not include recorded trophies or achievements in their original forms. This move could be Sony’s way to make it easier for developers to quickly get their older games ready for PS4 and PS5 releases without breaking the technical limitations of the platforms for which these games were originally designed.

While Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is the only new game added to the Premium tier, there are also seven games newly available on PlayStation Plus’ Extra tier. For PlayStation 5 owners, these new additions include Madden NFL 26, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, and Metal Eden, while both PS4 and PS5 owners can now enjoy Persona 5 Royal, Blasphemous 2, and Astroneer on PlayStation Plus.
