New PS6 Patent Reveals First Major Improvement Over the PS5

New PS6 Patent Reveals First Major Improvement Over the PS5

A new patent for the PS6 shows one area where it intends to improve over its predecessor, the PS5. It’s worth noting that, as a patent, there’s no guarantee that this is actually in the upcoming hardware, but it’s also something that would make a lot of sense for the PS6 console.

The PlayStation 6 is essentially Sony’s worst-kept secret, as while the company has not outright announced the next-gen hardware, plenty of real-world events have forced it to discuss plans for the future. As but one example, the PS6 is believed to be digital only because the company is shutting down PlayStation game disc production in January 2028. There’s no reason to release a physical console in the Fall of 2027 if none of its games are going to have disc support, but for many folks, that means relying on the PS6 hardware to constantly be at its best.

Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden offers his insight into the company’s decision-making process around the PS6 and disc production.

New PS6 Cooling System Discovered in Patent

A newly discovered PS6 patent, filed in June 2026 (and first reported by Tech4Gamers), includes a new and improved “advanced cooling system” over the PS5 that remains as efficient whether the console is standing upright or lying horizontally. In other words, it sounds like the PS6 form factor is not going to be drastically different from the PS5, although it will certainly look a little different. In fact, patents associated with the new cooling system use a PS5 form as images (to avoid showing what the PS6 looks like).

In short, the PS6 patent outlines a new heat pipe design that can better transfer heat away from internal components. The technology appears designed to improve cooling capacity, if not rate, allowing for better cooling consistently. It’s improbable that the PS6 will be “overheat-proof,” but new and improved cooling systems have been mainstays of every PlayStation console generation. Whether it’s this exact patent or not, fans can reasonably expect new advanced cooling system improvements for the PS6.

That said, it’s not like it’s a revolutionary find or improvement, regardless. PS5 consoles sometimes struggle with heat management and there are always going to be individualized issues, but it’s not like it’s a widespread issue across base PS5 or PS5 Pro consoles at all. A more advanced cooling solution would allow Sony to potentially push PS6 hardware further while keeping temps under control, but that’s one of many design ethos that remain unconfirmed for the upcoming hardware.

Of course, this is still only a patent, and there is no guarantee that this technology will actually appear in the PS6 or any future PlayStation hardware. Many patented technologies never make it into consumer products, so this should be viewed as an idea PlayStation is exploring rather than a confirmed feature for the PS6, but new and improved cooling is expected all the same.
