New Red Dead Redemption Release Gets Disappointing Update

New Red Dead Redemption Release Gets Disappointing Update

A reputable leaker has indicated that the PlayStation 5 Pro version of Red Dead Redemption 2 may be delayed, all thanks to Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar has never actually confirmed plans to release a current-gen port of Red Dead Redemption 2, but it has long been rumored to be in development at the studio.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best-selling video games of all time, behind the likes of Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto 5. There is no denying that Rockstar’s Western masterpiece is an absolute titan, but almost six years after the release of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S, the game is still only available on PC and last-gen consoles. Given its enormous popularity, it’s somewhat surprising that Rockstar hasn’t capitalized on this, even with the ongoing development of GTA 6.

GTA 6 Development Means Red Dead Redemption 2’s PS5 Pro Port Could Be Delayed

According to leaker NateTheHate on X, Grand Theft Auto 6 finally committing to its November 19, 2026, release date has potentially had a knock-on effect on the Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 Pro port. They claim that “the game can sit in a finished state & release whenever Rockstar needs/wants.” They also indicated that “RDR2 could have been used to soften the blow,” had GTA 6 been further delayed into next year. But for now, the developer doesn’t need to play that card.

It makes a lot of sense for Rockstar not to deploy another version of Red Dead Redemption 2, with Grand Theft Auto 6 just around the corner. While it’s unlikely that an eight-year-old game would take away the spotlight from what is expected to be the biggest video game launch of all time, there’s simply no need to run the risk regardless. The studio is going to want every single gamer playing Grand Theft Auto 6 on launch day, so its Western title will seemingly need to wait until 2027 to have another release.

It’s worth noting that Rockstar has never officially confirmed the existence of current-gen versions of Red Dead Redemption 2, with it being based entirely on rumors and leaks so far. RDR2‘s current-gen ports have been rumored to be in development for a while now, but nothing has come to fruition as of yet. By the sounds of it, don’t expect to hear anything until the dust has settled on Grand Theft Auto 6‘s inevitably gargantuan launch.

With a gap of eight years between Rockstar titles, it’s fair to suggest that a possible Red Dead Redemption 3 is still some time away yet. The success of the previous game makes a new title feel inevitable, and Arthur Morgan actor Roger Clark recently said that he has no idea when RDR3 will be released.
