A new third-person shooter game on Steam called Armatus looks like an interesting blend of games like DOOM and Devil May Cry if they collided and formed a roguelike. Steam has many titles where players face off against demonic creatures in fast-paced action, but not all of them can be compared to games like id Software’s iconic DOOM series and Capcom’s beloved Devil May Cry franchise.

Armatus has been on some third-person shooter fans’ radar for a while, and it recently confirmed its anticipated release date. According to developer Counterplay Games, Armatus launches on January 7, 2027, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Switch 2. The good news for Xbox users is that Armatus is also confirmed to be a day-one Xbox Game Pass Ultimate release, allowing subscribers to experience it at no additional cost.

Armatus Seems Inspired by DOOM’s Enemy Design and Story

While it is a third-person shooter, Armatus seems to have a lot in common with recent DOOM games. The enemies have the same “straight out of hell” vibe seen in id Software’s franchise, and the story premise might also sound familiar to fans of Doomguy’s adventures: Armatus portrays a post-apocalyptic world that’s been raided by demons and hellish creatures. Also, the protagonist in Armatus, who seemingly goes by Warrior, is as vaguely characterized as Doomguy, being described as a soldier “from an unknown realm.”

Devil May Cry’s Stylishness and Gothic Theme Can Be Seen in Armatus

Armatus takes place in a fictional post-apocalyptic Paris, which has the same gothic vibe as Devil May Cry games. Fans likely know that some games in Capcom’s renowned franchise take place in a world that seems to be inspired by Western countries, and the same design philosophy appears to be shaping Armatus‘ universe. Moreover, the stylish weapon designs in Armatus might also remind fans of Capcom’s iconic action series. Similar to DMC protagonists, the Warrior in Armatus is skilled in both melee and long-range combat, carrying a combination of firearms and a scythe at all times.

Armatus Puts ‘Demon Slaughter’ on Repeat

While its visual identity and some gameplay mechanics might be comparable to games like DOOM and Devil May Cry, Armatus has its own unique selling points. For one, it takes the demon-slaying formula of those games into a brand-new genre while adding high replay value through roguelike elements. Thanks to the changing combinations of weapons and power-ups, each run in Armatus can feel and play differently.

It remains to be seen if Armatus can indeed satisfy fans of shooter games that are all about slaying demons. So far, the game has had a successful demo release on Steam, and the overall sentiment towards it seems to be positive. Curious gamers looking to play the game early can currently sign up for a playtest on Armatus‘ official website, though registration doesn’t guarantee early access.
