New Steam Game Is Black Myth: Wukong Meets Avatar: The Last Airbender

New Steam Game Is Black Myth: Wukong Meets Avatar: The Last Airbender

The God Slayer is an upcoming Steam game that appears to be an intriguing mix of Black Myth: Wukong and Avatar: The Last Airbender. It is being developed by Pathea Games, which is best known for its cozy life simulator Steam titles, My Time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock.

That said, The God Slayer appears to be the Chinese developer’s most ambitious project yet. In fact, it is already being compared to successful games like Black Myth: Wukong, as well as acclaimed Japanese works such as the Avatar: The Last Airbender anime.

New Steam Game Is Like Minecraft Meets No Man’s Sky

Minecraft and No Man’s Sky fans have plenty to look forward to, as an upcoming Steam game combines key elements from both iconic titles.

The God Slayer Gameplay and Story Features

  • Open-world map
  • Role-playing aspects
  • Eastern-inspired steampunk setting
  • Element-based martial arts combats
  • Sandbox aspects
  • Single-player campaign

The God Slayer Is Another Ambitious Chinese Game

Black Myth: Wukong Seems to Have Inspired Its Setting and Story

According to Chinese developer Pathea Games, The God Slayer is set in a fictional, Eastern-inspired kingdom dominated by gods, or Celestials. This brief description of the setting is enough to remind any avid gamer of another Eastern-inspired game where gods are central enemies: Black Myth: Wukong.

In a clip showcasing about seven minutes of The God Slayer’s gameplay, fans can see multiple non-human enemies, including a giant Celestial reminiscent of the massive characters in Black Myth: Wukong, such as The Four Heavenly Kings. Story-wise, the conflict involving the protagonist in The God Slayer may also remind fans of Wukong’s tale, as it centers on a revolt against god-like, cruel rulers.

The similarities between the two games go beyond both being Chinese titles with mythological elements. The God Slayer presents itself as a fantasy role-playing game, placing it in the same genre as Black Myth: Wukong. The biggest difference is that the upcoming game will be an open-world title with sandbox elements, whereas Wukong lacks these gameplay features.

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Influence on The God Slayer Is Undeniable

Core Combat Mechanics in The God Slayer Seem Straight Out of Avatar: The Last Airbender

As an action RPG, The God Slayer puts combat at the heart of its gameplay. From what has been revealed so far, the battles appear to be based on martial arts techniques combined with an element manipulation system reminiscent of the well-known anime Avatar: The Last Airbender. Players in The God Slayer will take on the role of an Elemancer, a human who can control five elements: fire, water, wood, metal, and earth.

The gameplay video shared by the developer shows the protagonist using their powers to set enemies on fire, flood them with water, break their stance with stones, and block attacks using nearby wooden objects. These elemental interactions are enough to remind fans of the anime Avatar: The Last Airbender, especially when the protagonist uses fire, water, and earth—three of the four core elements in the series.

Despite the Obvious Inspirations, The God Slayer Looks Innovative

While The God Slayer might seem like a simple combination of Black Myth: Wukong and Avatar: The Last Airbender on paper, it introduces ideas that could make it a unique action role-playing game. For example, the developer has mentioned that the element-based combat system features interconnected, dynamic interactions, allowing players to combine elemental effects. Pathea Games has noted that water, for instance, can be transformed into ice or steam using the right powers.

Another potential selling point is its open-world map, populated with different factions. According to the developer, players will be able to interact with various NPCs and experience unique dialogues that help unfold the game’s story and secrets.

The God Slayer Release Date

Since the game was announced recently and its Steam page was created only on December 5, it’s too early to have an exact release window. Pathea Games has not disclosed a release date, and given the game’s size and ambitious gameplay, it may still be a while before it launches. However, since the developer has already showcased a fairly lengthy gameplay demo, some speculate that fans may be able to see The God Slayer released within the next year or two.
