New Steam Game is Like a Tactical Twist on Classic Resident Evil

New Steam Game is Like a Tactical Twist on Classic Resident Evil

The horror genre has been experiencing a massive renaissance in recent years, with major franchises like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Dead Space, and even Fatal Frame receiving revivals and new entries, and just as the AAA sector of horror gaming has seen a huge surge in fresh releases, indie titles like Vultures – Scavengers of Death are also bringing back the retro gameplay and aesthetics with upcoming release dates. Presently slated to launch Q1 2026 exclusively for PC via Steam, Vultures – Scavengers of Death not only re-introduces old-school survival horror gaming reminiscent of the original Resident Evil but also blends in some unexpected mechanics more reminiscent of fantasy entries like Final Fantasy Tactics.

While the survival horror genre was a term originally coined with the first Resident Evil game in 1996, many point to 1982’s Haunted House, 1989’s Sweet Home, and 1992’s Alone in the Dark for introducing many of the features that would later become mainstays of the genre. As horror as a whole has evolved through gaming over the years, a variety of new gameplay mechanics have been introduced, with iconic elements like Fatal Frame‘s ghost-fighting camera and Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem‘s sanity meter among the more recognizable features that have been mimicked by other AAA and indie releases. Looking to draw inspiration from its predecessors while setting itself apart from the competition, Vultures – Scavengers of Death looks to build upon the success of legendary survival horror games while also taking a surprising note from turn-based RPGs.

New Steam Horror Game is Like Fatal Frame Meets Resident Evil

This upcoming retro survival horror game on Steam brings nostalgia and scares with serious Fatal Frame and Resident Evil vibes.

Vultures – Scavengers of Death Blends Resident Evil Horror with Final Fantasy Tactics Gameplay

Dropping audiences into a world inspired by the monsters and mayhem of 90s horror, Vultures – Scavengers of Death is a tactical turn-based survival horror game that sees players taking on the role of VULTURES operatives who must fight their way through the infested metropolis of Salento Valley to scavenge for useful materials and vital information in an effort to try and cure a plague that has decimated the globe. Players will choose from a crew of select VULTURES agents, each with their own unique combat style and weapons load-out, and tackle infiltration missions that will require tactical planning, clever stealth, and turn-based combat, similar to games like Final Fantasy Tactics. Whether aiming for kill shots via vital spots or simply weakening an opponent to ensure a quick getaway, players will need to utilize a variety of strategies to extract their targets and fight to find the cure.

Just defeating enemies will not be enough to overcome the infection that has ravaged its way through Vultures – Scavengers of Death, though. Players will also need to collect relics, decipher notes, and gather items to help piece together a path to survival. The horrifying mutations and otherworldly abominations stalking the desolate wasteland of Salento Valley will prove increasingly challenging foes, pushing players to the limits and forcing every tense choice to lead to either success or death. Combining PS1 survival horror game visuals with retro gameplay from multiple genres, Vultures – Scavengers of Death is available now for wishlisting on Steam.

A number of new horror games with retro vibes have become massively popular among modern fans, perhaps showing a desire for nostalgic experiences through new stories. Studios like Puppet Combo and Chilla’s Art have frequently proven that simple graphics combined with compelling stories and atmospheric horror can be wildly successful. If Vultures – Scavengers of Death is able to capture fans of both survival horror and turn-based tactical gameplay with its throwback Resident Evil similarities and unique twist on fighting horrific monsters, it may be able to join the continuously growing ranks of hit indie horror games on Steam.
