New Switch 2 Controllers Officially Revealed

New Switch 2 Controllers Officially Revealed

A new pair of Joy-Con controllers have been revealed for Nintendo Switch 2, and they’ll be available for purchase in July. The Joy-Con controllers were redesigned at the start of the Nintendo Switch 2 era, with several improvements made over the ones that shipped with the previous system. During the original Switch’s time on the market, a massive number of Joy-Con designs were offered in stores, including options based on games like Fortnite and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Thus far, Nintendo has been more reserved with variations of the Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers. New Joy-Con 2 colors were released alongside Mario Tennis Fever, but options have been mostly limited for the new system. However, it’s possible that more will be released over the coming years. Nintendo tends to release new contoller options to coincide with major games, and that will likely continue over time.

Nintendo Switch 2’s new Joy-Con 2 color pattern is inspired by the members of Deep Cut from the Splatoon series: Shiver, Frye, and Big Man. The controllers will feature the same black finish as the ones that come bundled with the system itself, but the accents around the thumb sticks and on the magnetic connection will be blue on the left side and yellow on the right side. Splatoon Raiders comes out July 23, and the new Joy-Con controllers will be available on the same day.

It’s become something of a trend for new Splatoon games to launch alongside new controllers. Both Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3 received their own special Pro Controllers and Joy-Con pairs when they came out on the original Switch. Launch could get a bit expensive for passionate Splatoon fans, as a trio of amiibo based on the game will also be made available on that day. All of this says a lot about Splatoon‘s international popularity, as there are plenty of other games that don’t see this level of support.

Unfortunately, the new Joy-Con colors continue a frustrating pattern since Switch 2’s launch last year. Fans dislike how all Switch 2 Joy-Con pairs have the same black shell, and there already seems to be backlash about the Splatoon Raiders designs. Since the magnetic connections are hidden when the system is in handheld mode, only the colors around the thumb sticks can be seen. The original Switch had a number of vibrant Joy-Con designs that allowed users to add some personal flair. That hasn’t been the case with Switch 2 just yet, and that isn’t sitting well with a lot of people.

With several high-profile Switch 2 games coming out in 2026, it’s possible more Joy-Con designs will be released before the end of the year. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort was recently announced, and it would make sense to reveal another set of controllers, given the game’s focus on Joy-Con activities. There’s also a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake coming this year. Nintendo has released several controllers based on the series over the years, so that also seems like a safe bet. Anyone on the fence about buying the new Splatoon Raiders Joy-Con pair should keep those possibilities in mind, though nothing has been confirmed at this time.
